Use the table to answer the questions below.

  1. Compute the sensitivity of self-reported obesity measurement.
  2. Express what this means in the context of this scenario. (Review Part B directions for ideas.)
  3. Compute the specificity of self-reported obesity measurement.
  4. Express what this means in the context of this scenario.
  5. Compute the positive predictive value of self-reported obesity measurement.
  6. Express what this means in the context of this scenario.
Part B: Although we typically think of sensitivity and specificity as it relates to tests, it can
also be used to determine how well one method of measurement works compared to
another. For example, we could see how accurate self-reported answers on a survey are in
comparison to clinical measurements. Here is an example.
A survey is conducted of 1000 patients asking them to state YES/NO to the following
question: Are you obese? Then, clinical measurements of those same 1000 patients were
taken to determine a clinical diagnosis of obesity. Results are shown in the table.
Answer the questions. Show all formulas/calculations.
