Question

How does the composition of urine help to maintain a healthy physiological acid-base balance?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Kidneys are the primary organs of excretion, particularly nitrogenous wastes. They are also organs of homeostasis because they regulate the water-salt balance and the acid-base balance of the blood.

Acid-base imbalance occurs when the pH of the blood changes significantly from normal range of 7.35-7.45. An excess of acid in the blood causes acidemia and an excess of base causes alkalemia.
