Solve this equation for I(t) with I(0) =lo. What is I(t) as t approaches infinity?
Scientists are working on a new technique to kill cancer cells by zapping them with ultrahighenergy (in the range of 1012 W) pulses of light that last for an extremely short time (a few nanoseconds). These short pulses scramble the interior of a cell without causing it to explode, as long pulses would do. We can model a typical such cell as a disk 5.0 µm in diameter, with the pulse lasting for 4.0 ns with an average power of 2.0 x 1012 W. We shall assume that the energy is spread uniformly over the faces of 100 cells for each pulse. (a) How much energy is given to the cell during this pulse? (b) What is the intensity (in W/m2 ) delivered to the cell? (c) What are the maximum values of the electric and magnetic fields in the pulse?
Distances in space are often quoted in units of light years, the distance light travels in one year.
The most distant galaxy yet discovered is 12.0 × 109 light years away. How far is this in meters?

- Lunar astronauts placed a reflector on the Moon’s surface, from which a laser beam is periodically reflected. The distance to the Moon is calculated from the round-trip time. To what precision, in meters, can the distance to the Moon be determined, if this time can be measured to 0.105 ns?arrow_forwardHigh-speed flash photography was pioneered by Doc Edgerton in the 1930s, while he was a professor of electrical engineering at MIT. You might have seen examples of his work in the amazing shots of hummingbirds in motion, a drop of milk splattering on a table, or a bullet penetrating an apple . To stop the motion and capture these pictures, one needs a high-intensity, very short pulsed flash, as mentioned earlier in this module. Suppose one wished to capture the picture of a bullet (moving at 5.0×102 m/s ) that was passing through an apple. The duration of the flash is related to the RC time constant, τ . What size capacitor would one need in the RC circuit to succeed, if the resistance of the flash tube was 10.0 Ω ? Assume the apple is a sphere with a diameter of 8.0×10–2 m.arrow_forwardThe image attached is a neat copy of a photo of an electricity meter for a domestic solar array. The display shows the energy we sold to the electricity company on a winter's day. Each box is 100 W high and 1 hr wide. At the radius of the earth's orbit, the intensity of sunlight is I=1.4 kW.m–2 . (This means that 1.4 kW.m–2 passes through 1 square metre at right angles to the sun's rays.) The solar array in the previous question consists of 10 panels, each with area A=1.6 m2 . Under optimal conditions - with the sun at right angles to the array and no clouds in the sky - the array produces Pout=2.3 kW . What is the efficiency of the array?
