Chapter 21, Problem 108GQ
In 1774, C. Scheele obtained a gas by reacting pyrolusite (MnO2) with sulfuric acid. The gas, which had been obtained that same year by Joseph Priestley by a different method, was an element, A.
(a) What is the element isolated by Scheele and Priestley?
(b) Element A combines with almost all other elements. For example, with cesium it gives a compound in which the mass percent of A is 19.39%. The element combines with hydrogen to give a compound with a mass percent of element A of 94.12%. Determine the formulas of the cesium and hydrogen compounds.
(c) The compounds of cesium and hydrogen with element A react with one another. Write a balanced equation for the reaction.

Until the early 1960s the group 8A elements were called the inert gases; before that they were called the rare gases. The term rare gases was dropped after it was discovered that argon accounts for roughly 1% of Earth’s atmosphere. (a) Why was the term inert gases dropped? (b) What discovery triggered this change in name? (c)What name is applied to the group now?
3. Consider the nickel salt: (NH4 )2Ni(SO4 )2 ·y H2O (Ammonium Nickel Sulfate Hydrate), where y is the number of coordinated waters.
(a) Assuming that the product is anhydrous (y = 0), what is the theoretical yield of ammonium nickel sulfate from 1.500 g of Ni (s)?
(b) The actual yield of product was 9.640 g - obviously containing coordinated water. The product was then heated strongly until all the water had been driven off. The resulting anhydrous salt had mass 7.000 g. What is the value of y?
(c) Based on the mass of the anhydrous product (7.000 g), what is the % yield of the reaction?
