Concept explainers
To describe: the shape, center, and spread of the distribution.
Answer to Problem 52E
Shape:skewed towards right
Center: 2 to 5 letters
Spread: 1 letter to 12 letters per word
Explanation of Solution
Given:
Calculation:
The shape, centre and spread of the distribution of the histogram showing the distribution of lengths of words used in Shakespeare's plays is below:
Shape: The distribution is skewed towards right means majority of words are of 2 to 5 letters but several have 6-12 letters words. So the graph has a spread towards right from its peak. The distribution is unimodal i.e. it has single peak.
Centre: From the graph we see that midpoint (median) would fall somewhere in the 2-3 words.
Spread: The histogram shows that the distribution of lengths of words used in Shakespeare's plays varies from 1 letter to 12 letters per word.
Outliers: There are no outliers in the data i.e. there are no extreme values in the data.
