The environment can be a barrier, for example when residents are in the lounge area watching television or participating with activities and staff are attempting to communicate effectively with residents or other staff members, this can be a distraction for resident’s and staff.
Outcome 2.1: Explain how you monitor the effectiveness of communication systems and practices in your work place.
It is vital to monitor the effectiveness of communication systems and practices, within my job role I monitor communication by asking verbal questions to ensure that information has been understood and staff are made aware of what is required of them in regards to their working practices and roles and responsibilities.
Formal communication is used during handover reports when I discuss resident’s care needs with staff I monitor the effectiveness of the communication methods to ensure that staff have understood and have obtained the correct information, staff will ask questions if changes have been identified I use this to determine that communication has been effective. Also when communicating with my manager or other professionals any changes to residents care needs I monitor the effectiveness by ensuring that information has been recorded either in resident’s care plan, diary or emails.
When communicating with family members either by telephone/email or letter I monitor the effectiveness by asking for feedback on the method used.

In this essay I will be explaining how I use good communication and interpersonal interactions with the residents I will meet on my work experience at a residential home for older people. Communication is constantly happening within the day care centre and in my job role I have a responsibility to communicate with staff, service users and other professionals. I use various forms of communication but I also seek to make sure that it is understood. Communication has got to be understood before it can be effective and so I try to ensure comprehension when I am verbally speaking by getting staff to repeat what I have asked them to do. I also write simply worded memos and emails to ensure ease of comprehension. 1.1 I communicate with a wide range of groups and individuals on a daily, weekly, and less frequent basis within my role as care home manager. These include other managers, operations manager, managing director and company owners as well as support workers, clients, team leaders, social workers, care managers, families, health and educational professionals, learning disability team members from 6 different boroughs etc.

Everyone needs educating and supporting including myself when looking at the individuals preferred method of communication, and everyone in the above list can give valid input in assessing for example swallowing by the speech therapists. This can include communication with the RN, GP for referral, to speaking with the catering chef and carers. By doing this with effective communication and documenting accurately we can ensure that everyone’s input is maximized and as well as being written and passed on verbally it is put into practice. This results in the clients personalized care needs being met

Within my role there are many individuals to communication with. Staff range from therapists, recovery workers, finance department. Managers, Admin staff, Education and employment staff, HR
Ineffective communication can be devastating to a department within an organization. This usually occurs when managers do not meet with staff regularly to check in or update staff of new occurrences. Even if the manager does follow through with regular meetings the manager must abide by the three “C’s” rule of communicating with clarity, completion, and conciseness (Juneja, 2011).
Training is received by all staff on communication to help overcome barriers and to make staff more knowledgeable of barriers which can be in the way when communicating. It Is part of my role to make sure staff bring back the training they are given and if they are late in doing so then reminders are given verbally and written.
