The different reason people communicate is to show pain, anger, joy, love etc. It is important for people communicate so their views, wishes and information gets across. The communication could be formal or informal. Documentation and record keeping is important in the social care sector as this information may be used for legal reasons. All communications is confidential and are on a “need to know” basis. Communication between colleagues and other healthcare professionals is essential, as it ensures continuity of care. It also shows staff are aware of the current needs of the client.

To communicate effectivley all of this must be taken into account. If communication needs are not taken into account, problems will begin to arise such as distress to the client, anger/frustrating leading to possible violence and the client not recieving adequate care.

Everyone needs educating and supporting including myself when looking at the individuals preferred method of communication, and everyone in the above list can give valid input in assessing for example swallowing by the speech therapists. This can include communication with the RN, GP for referral, to speaking with the catering chef and carers. By doing this with effective communication and documenting accurately we can ensure that everyone’s input is maximized and as well as being written and passed on verbally it is put into practice. 2.3 You can show how and when to seek advice about communication if you feel unsure about something, maybe a physical incident may have taken place which worried you, maybe something was thrown at you. Sometimes complex cases need extra assistance and help can be sought by talking to your peers, line managers, the individuals carer. A line manager or supervisor can help advise on specialist organisations who offer expert advice and services, as it is best not to think or second guess that you can manage the situation by yourself especially if you do not have the necessary skill set to deal with certain communication problems. Professional duty to ensure individuals receive the very best care and support is essential to provide the best service you can for them.

Cultural differences could be a problem, because different people have different beliefs, Traditions etc. they differ between countries, in religious societies, and people. For example, in Asia, they believe that giving eye contact to the elders is rude, they see it as a sign of disrespect. Therefore the traditions in Asia is, when the elders are speaking to the younger people, they must lower their gaze. Although it’s a tradition, people from other countries have to respect it. A lot of people, in the modern world, criticise these traditions. Another barrier, that occurs under cultural differences is that, maybe the person you are talking to does not speak English, or maybe they are confused and lost in translation, whilst you are talking, this can be a very serious situation, for example, if you have to tell somebody who does not understand your language, you may email them, and due to language differences they may read words like "thanks" as an offensive word in their native tongue, in order to overcome this problem it is advisable that you use a professional translator, such as google translate or through an online website, this is if it is working on a computer, and if its face to face method, then you can find someone who can speak multiple languages to come with you whilst you’re telling the person that doesn't speak English what to do.
