Q4.
Water is flowing in AF pipe (Figure 1) at a velocity of 2 m/s and a pressure of 102400 Pa, the pipe length
is 100 m. If the water pressure needs to be at a pressure of 1.6 atm on a lower level. What should be
the different in elevation between the upper and lower levels in order to achieve this pressure? Take
the density of water 1000 kg/m and gravity is 9.81 m/s, consider the energy loss.
Cavitation tests are being done on a model pump with an impeller diameter of 20 cm and an
inlet pipe diameter of 8 cm. Pumping water at 80°C and running at 2400 rpm, it is observed
to cavitate when the static pressure at the inlet is 80 kPa and the flow rate is 1800 L/min.
Find the required NPSH of a prototype pump that is 6 times larger and runs at 1000 rpm
while pumping water at the same temperature.
