The reason why autoregulation in Figure 49.19 is described as a positive feedback loop.

Given:

The control of blood pressure through the local and systemic mechanisms has been described in figure 49.19.

Life: The Science of Biology, Chapter 49.5, Problem 1R

Introduction:

Autoregulation of blood pressure means maintaining constant blood flow throughout the system by the organs themselves. In this type of regulation, if there is a fall in blood pressure of any organ, then it can be returned to its normal range within a few minutes by the organ itself. It involves both positive and negative feedback loops.

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone that stimulates the production of erythrocytes in red bone marrow. Although EPO is primarily produced and released by the kidneys in response to low tissue levels of oxygen, several other tissues, including the liver and neurons of the central nervous system (CNS), can produce EPO. EPO binds the EPO receptor (EPOR) in erythrocyte precursor cells, causing them to differentiate into mature erythrocytes that are released into circulation. As the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood increases, secretion of EPO by the kidneys decreases. Neurons in the CNS also express EPOR, and EPO has been shown to decrease apoptosis of both erythrocyte precursor cells and CNS neurons. EPO also promotes angiogenesis, the production of new blood vessels. The human EPO gene has been cloned and expressed in vitro. The recombinant gene product (rHuEPO) is frequently administered to patients who have anemia resulting from either kidney failure or chemotherapy.…
During rhythmic, moderately intense aerobic exercise, there is a redistribution of blood flow throughout the body. Which of the following statements is true? O beta-2 receptors cause dilation and increased blood flow to the exercising muscle there is a large increase in blood flow to the brain to keep you alert mean arterial pressure increases 5-8x due to a similar increase in total cardiac output blood flow to the kidneys and gut increases due to the presence of alpha-2 receptors
