Chapter 4, Problem 1.1SC
Summary Introduction

To determine: The color of light that gives better resolution when using a microscope: blue with wavelength 0.48 µm or red with wavelength 0.68 µm.

Introduction: A microscope is an instrument that helps to view objects that are very minute to be viewed by an unaided human eye. Light has many properties, which influence the ability to view objects under the microscope and also with the unaided eye. Wavelength is one of the main properties of light and is related to resolution.

Explanation of Solution

The ability to visualize two items as separate as well as discrete units instead of viewing as a fuzzy, single overlapped image is called resolution. If light’s wavelength by which the object is viewed is too long, then the objects appear as single. In order to see the objects separately, the wavelength should be short. Therefore, the color of light that gives better resolution is blue as it has a shorter wavelength than red.
