A plastic film with index of refraction 1.70 is applied to the surface of a car window to increase the reflectivity and thus to keep the car’s interior cooler. The window glass has index of refraction 1.52. (a) What minimum thickness is required if light of wavelength 550 nm in air reflected from the two sides of the film is to interfere constructively? (b) Coatings as thin as that calculated in part (a) are difficult to manufacture and install. What is the next greater thickness for which constructive interference will also occur?

- To save money on making military aircraft invisible to radar, an inventor decides to coat them with a nonreflective material having an index of refraction of 1.20, which is between that of air and the surface of the plane. This, he reasons, should be much cheaper than designing Stealth bombers. (a) What thickness should the coating be to inhibit the reflection of 4.00-cm wavelength radar? (b) What is unreasonable about this result? (c) Which assumptions are unreasonable or inconsistent?arrow_forwardA beam of 580-nm light passes through two closely spaced glass plates at close to normal incidence as shown in Figure P27.23. For what minimum nonzero value of the plate separation d is the transmitted light bright?arrow_forwardAstronomers observe the chromosphere of the Sun with a filter that passes the red hydrogen spectral line of wavelength 656.3 nm, called the H line. The filter consists of a transparent dielectric of thickness d held between two partially aluminized glass plates. The filter is held at a constant temperature. (a) Find the minimum value of d that produces maximum transmission of perpendicular H light if the dielectric has an index of refraction of 1.378. (b) What If? If the temperature of the filter increases above the normal value, increasing its thickness, what happens to the transmitted wavelength? (c) The dielectric will also pass what near-visible wavelength? One of the glass plates is colored red to absorb this light.arrow_forward
- The movable mirror of a Michelson interferometer is attached to one end of a thin metal rod of length 23.3 mm. The other end of the rod is anchored so it does not move. As the temperature of the rod changes from 15°C to 25 C , a change of 14 fringes is observed. The light source is a He Ne laser, =632.8 nm . What is the change in length of the metal bar, and what is its thermal expansion coefficient?arrow_forwardConsider a single-slit diffraction pattern for =589 nm, projected on a screen that is 1.00 m from a slit of width 0.25 mm. How far from the center of the pattern are the centers of the first and second dark fringes?arrow_forward3. a) Calculate the reflectance of a quarter-wave anti-reflecting film of magnesium fluoride (n = 1.35) coated on an optical glass surface of index 1.52. b) Calculate the peak reflectance of a high-reflecting multilayer film consisting of N = 4 stacks of coating materials with high-low refractive index (nH = 2.8 and n, = 1.4).arrow_forward
- Astronomers observe the chromosphere of the Sun with a filter that passes the red hydrogen spectral line of wavelength 656.3 nm, called the Holine. The filter consists of a transparent dielectric of thickness d held between two partially aluminized glass plates. The filter is kept at a constant temperature. (a) Find the minimum value of d that will produce maximum transmission of perpendicular H light if the dielectric has an index of refraction of 1.400. (Enter your answer to one decimal place.) nm (b) If the temperature of the filter increases above the normal value increasing its thickness, what happens to the transmitted wavelength? (Assume the index of refraction of the dielectric remains constant.) ---Select--- (c) The dielectric will also pass what near-visible wavelength? Calculate the Reflectance for 550 nm wavelength when a 50nm thick Al2O3 layer is deposited on Si. Given: Refractive index of Air = 1. Refractive index of Al2O3 = 1.77.arrow_forwardA thin uniform film of refractive index 1.750 is placed on a sheet of glass with a refractive index 1.50. At room temperature (22.4 °C), this film is just thick enough for light with a wavelength 580.5 nm reflected off the top of the film to be canceled by light reflected from the top of the glass. After the glass is placed in an oven and slowly heated to 176 °C, you find that the film cancels reflected light with a wavelength 588.0 nm Part A What is the coefficient of linear expansion of the film?
