Chapter 31.5, Problem 1TC
Summary Introduction

To describe: The events that happened to the population of coyotes and white-tailed deer between 1700 and now in terms of their range and abundance.

Introduction: Before 1700, wolves roamed over almost all-over North America, coyotes were found mostly in the west of the Mississippi, and white-tailed deer lived throughout the eastern United States, and here most of the land was covered with coniferous or deciduous forests. Wolves reduce the coyote and white-tailed deer population by chasing and hunting them.

In 1995, a population of 31 gray wolves was introduced into Yellowstone National Park. The population of the gray wolves fluctuated in the 20-year period after introduction. In 2019 an estimated 80-110 wolves are present in the park. Wolves, elk, and bison are native to Yellowstone, but the wolves disappeared in the 1920s due to excessive hunting. Wolves are primarily carnivores, and elk and bison are primarily herbivores. A team of scientists monitored the population of wolves in Yellowstone for the first 20 years after their release. This figure plots the breeding populations of fur seals as they recovered from uncontrolled hunting. Based on this graph, what is the approximate carrying capacity of the fur seal's breeding habitat? 10 a) about 1,000 seals b) about 5,000 seals 6. c) about 10,000 seals 1915 1925 1935 1945 Year Data from K. You are part of a group of researchers examining the survivorship and fecundity of Bengal Tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) in the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Parts of the reserve are well-protected from poaching, and other parts are largely unprotected. Over a period of several years, you’ve gathered demographic data (summarized below) on tigers in both poached and unpoached locations; assume that mx numbers represent female offspring born per female. Note that your demographic data begins at age 1, and does not include survivorship of cubs from birth to age 1. Also, note that Sx is listed here -- this is related to, but is NOT the same as lx… To calculate r, use the formula r = ln(Ro)/T.               Including     unpoached poaching   Tiger age (x) Sx Sx Mx 0 1 1 0 1     0 2 0.83 0.69 0.04 3 0.91 0.65 0.64 4 0.9 0.62 0.78 5 0.85 0.6 0.71 6…
