Predictive Data Analytics - Forecasting tools are used to predict how a sample population is going to behave based on past precedent. A classic example is forecasting stock prices or predicting consumer behavior
Descriptive Data Analytics - Simply put, it is a numeric that represents a variable. Your book states that the world Population is 7-Billion in 2015.....this is descriptive. Or gas prices today are $3.50 per gallon
Prescriptive Data Analytics - Like your book states, it is a methodology that seeks to make decisions (prescription) based on Descriptive data. The most classic example is the U.S. Census. Census Workers go from door-to-door asking people in households questions such as "how many people live in your home?" "What are their ages?" "What are their gender". The answers to these questions provide the U.S. Government with the information they need in order to provide services that will support the Constituency in a particular geographic region or area.

Estimating Costs in an Uncertain Environment Many companies face increasingly unpredictable costs and revenues as the recession affects demand for products and the costs of materials and labor for these products. Revenues and costs have fluctuated significantly in recent years for such cost elements as fuel, labor, commodities (agricultural commodities, metals, etc.), interest, and rent expense, among others. Dealing with the increased fluctuations requires cost estimation methods that are more sophisticated and more frequently updated. The result is that companies are including in their cost estimation additional independent variables. Moreover, these companies are updating their estimation models more frequently. For example, Southwest Airlines updates its revenue prediction model on a daily basis.
Required Consider Southwest Airlines and the following six key areas of cost for the company. Which of these costs do you think the airline must update most frequently?
Flight crew.

Managers explain and voluntarily disclose the forecasted financial information to the external financial users at the beginning of the period. The purpose to provide the forecasted financial information is to help the external investors interpret managers’ forecasted earnings by examining the profitability of the firm when the investors forecast the earnings and make investment decision.
Discuss the extent to which you agree/disagree with that trend? You should support your reasoning with example(s).
