The given blank space in the statement, “three levels of biodiversity are___________, ___________, and ___________. If the population of a species becomes too small, it is likely to have lost much of its _____________ diversity.”
Introduction:
The term ‘biodiversity’ refers to the number of different varieties of species living on the earth. It includes plants, animals, microorganisms, as well as the entire ecosystem such as forests, national park, tiger reserve, bird sanctuary, and deserts. It is necessary to conserve the earth’s natural diversity because it is the basis for maintenance of the fauna and flora of ecosystem.
Explanation of Solution
There are three levels of biodiversity that exists in nature. They are species diversity, genetic diversity, and ecosystem diversity. The genetic diversity refers to the variety of genetic composition within a species. It means every individual of a species consists of the different genetic composition. Thus, it is necessary to conserve the different population of a species to conserve the genetic diversity.
Species diversity is defined as the variety of species of a particular region or habitat. Ecosystem diversity refers to the variety of ecosystem in a place. It means a variety of organisms interacts with the physical environment such as air, water, and soil. Due to overexploitation, some species are unable to reproduce effectively. Thus, the population becomes too small. This results in loss of genetic diversity.
Three levels of biodiversity are genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. If the population of a species becomes too small, it is likely to have lost much of its genetic diversity.
