Patient medical instruction sheets. Physicians and pharmacists sometimes fail to inform patients adequately about the proper application of prescription drugs and about the precautions to take in order to avoid potential side effects. One method of increasing patients’ awareness of the problem is for physicians to provide patient medication instruction (PM I) sheets. The American Medical Association, however, has found that only 20% of the doctors who prescribe drugs frequently distribute PMI sheets to their patients. Assume that 20% of all patients receive the PMI sheet with their prescriptions and that 12% receive the PMI sheet and are hospitalized because of a drug-related problem. What is the probability that a person will be hospitalized for a drug-related problem given that the person received the PMI sheet?

- "The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said about 72 million Americans-nearly one out of every four of the country's 304 million residents-are considered obese. Millions more are designated as overweight." The American trend toward obesity has prompted many physicians to offer weight-loss programs to their patients. [Source: Price, W. T. "Physicians Get into the Weight-Loss Business." Florida Today, July 7, 2008.] A physician conducted an experimental study to compare the effectiveness of four different weight-loss programs. In the study, 60 obese adults were randomly assigned to the four programs so that each program had 15 adults. The programs lasted for six months. The weights of the subjects were measured before and after the programs, and each subject's weight loss was computed in pounds. The following table summarizes the results of the study, giving the number of observations and the sample mean and variance of the subjects' weight loss in each program. While obesity has generally been linked with chronic disease and disability, researchers argue that it may also affect wages. In other words, the body mass index (BMI) of an employee is a predictor for salary. (A person is considered overweight if his/her BMI is at least 25 and obese if BMI exceeds 30.) The accompanying data file includes salary (in $1,000s) for 30 college-educated men with their respective BMI and a dummy variable that represents 1 for a white man and 0 otherwise. Relying on God's love and caring is referred to as positive religious coping. Andrea Phelps and her colleagues studied the relationship between positive religious coping and the type of care received by terminally ill cancer patients. Most of the patients in the study were Christian. [Source: Phelps, A. et al., "Religious coping and use of intensive life-prolonging care near death in patients with advanced cancer." Journal of the American Medical Association, 301 (2009): 1140-1147.] Suppose another researcher conducts a similar study but uses a sample of patients whose religious traditions are more varied than the patients in the Phelps study.
