Question
Chapter 27.6, Problem 2MC
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The data that led the researchers conclude that whales cannot taste umami, sweet, bitter, or sour.
Concept introduction:
The taste genes of the whale are present in the cell membrane of the taste receptors cells. These cells contain the protein which is encoded by the taste genes. There are two types of taste genes present in the whales that are T1R (taste receptor type 1) an T2R (taste receptor type 2). The T1R encode for the umami, and sweet taste receptors, and T2R encodes for the bitter taste receptor.

If you can taste only five things (salt, bitter, sweet, sour, umami), why do the many foods you eat all seem so distinct?
Distinguish between static and dynamic equilibrium. The sense of equilibrium (balance) is really two senses— static equilibrium and dynamic equilibrium—that come from different sensory organs. The organs of static equilibrium (stat′ik e″kwı˘-lib′re-um) sense the position of the head, maintaining balance, stability and posture when the head and body are still. When the head and body suddenly move or rotate, the organs of dynamic equilibrium (di-nam′ik e″kwı˘- lib′re-um) detect such motion and aid in maintaining balance.

- Listen The following passage comes from an abstract in a study about analyzing hearing loss in twins: "A clinical and genetic study on 25 twin pairs with at least one deaf member was performed. Concordance rate of hearing loss was 0.88 in MZ and 0.50 in DZ pairs" (MZ =monozygotic or identical twins. DZ -Dizygotic or fraternal twins). From this data alone, what can you conclude about the roles of environment and genetics in hearing loss? Explain how you reached your conclusion.arrow_forwardMy question is Salty and sour taste molecules are transduced directly into an electrical signal using _________________________ while sweet, bitter, and umami tastes are transduced indirectly into an electrical signal using ________________________.arrow_forwardThere are five basic tastes—sour, salty, sweet, bitter, and“umami.” Salt is detected when the concentration of salt outside of a taste bud cell is higher than that inside of it, and ionchannels allow the passive leakage of Na+into the cell. Theresulting change in membrane potential (see Concept 7.4)sends the “salty” signal to the brain. Umami is a savory tastegenerated by glutamate (glutamic acid, found in monosodiumglutamate, or MSG), which is used as a flavor enhancer in foodssuch as taco-flavored tortilla chips. The glutamate receptor is aGPCR, which, when bound, initiates a signaling pathway thatends with a cellular response, perceived by you as “taste.” If youeat a regular potato chip and then rinse your mouth, you willno longer taste salt. But if you eat a flavored tortilla chip andthen rinse, the taste persists. (Try it!) Propose a possible explanation for this difference.arrow_forward

In other words, how does the neuronal activity of these systems provide a code that allows distinct chemicals to be represented?arrow_forwardDeCasper and Fifer (1980) provided evidence that babies recognize their mothers' voices shortly after birth. Using a nonnutritive nipple attached to a sensing apparatus, DeCasper and Fifer showed that newborns would suck more to hear a tape of their mother's voice compared to a tape of a stranger's voice. Because they were newborns, they must have become familiar with the mother's voice while still in the womb. In a follow-up study, DeCasper and Spence had 16 pregnant mothers read a three minute long passage from the Dr. Seuss book The Cat in the Hat to their fetuses twice a day for the last 6.5 weeks of pregnancy. The mothers were also recorded reading three minute excerpts from two other stories. By the time the babies were born, the researchers calculated, they had heard The Cat in the Hat for about 5 hours. DeCasper and Spence used their sucking test again. The babies sucked more to hear The Cat in the Hat, regardless of whether it was in their mother's voice or another woman's…arrow_forward29.
