Concept explainers
To define: Neoplasm.
Introduction: Spontaneous or induced damage to the cells causes mutations. The mutations in genes that regulate cell growth either by inhibiting or promoting result in abnormal uncontrolled growth. The accumulation of these mutations leads to cancer. It can also be influenced by environmental factors, such as exposure of chemical carcinogens, radiations, and certain viruses.
Explanation of Solution
Neoplasm or tumor is an abnormal tissue mass that may be solid or fluid-filled lumps. There are two categories of tumors, such as benign and malignant tumors. Benign tumor does not invade other nearby parts and tissues in the body. Malignant tumors refer to cancerous tumors where abnormal cells divide rapidly and metastasize to new areas.
