Chapter 2, Problem 72CE

You can test Excel’s algorithm for selecting random integers with a simple experiment. Enter =RANDBETWEEN(1,2) into cell A1 and then copy it to cells A1:E20. This creates a data block of 100 cells containing either a one or a two. In cell G1 type =COUNTIF(A1:E20,“=1”) and in cell G2 type =COUNTIF(A1:E20,“=2”). Highlight cells G1 and G2 and create a column chart. Click on the vertical axis scale and set the lower limit to 0 and upper limit to 100. Then hold down the F9 key and observe the chart. Are you convinced that, on average, you are getting about 50 ones and 50 twos? Ambitious Students: Generalize this experiment to integers 1 through 5.

A researcher randomly selected 158 personal vehicles and noted the type of vehicle and its color. The two-way table displays the data. A 5-column table with 4 rows. Column 1 has entries sedan, S U V, convertible, total. Column 2 is labeled Red with entries 14, 9, 20, 43. Column 3 is labeled Blue/Green with entries 31, 19, 6, 56. Column 4 is labeled Black/Gray with entries 22, 34, 3, 59. Column 5 is labeled Total with entries 67, 62, 29, 158. The columns are titled Vehicle color and the rows are titled vehicle type. A researcher wanted to see if giving a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (anti depressant) would decrease the number of self-injurious behaviors (SIB’s) found in adolescents. They gave the anti depressant to a group of 8 participants and counted the numbers of SIBs a person performed for a month after taking the drug for 6 months. Here are the number of SIB’S performed by the 8 people, 27, 25, 32, 40, 43, 37, 35, 38.a. Find the mean variance, and standard deviation of this sample.b. Suppose the µ=45 and a population SD =5, what is thezscore?c. What is the SEM for this particular sample?
