Col. John Stapp’s final sied run Col. John Stapp led the U.S. Air Force Acro Medical Laboratory’s research into the effects of higher accelerations. On Stapp’s final sled run, the sled reached a speed of 282.5 m/s (632 mi/h) and then stopped with the aid of water brakes in 1.4 s. Stapp was barely conscious and lost his vision for several days but recovered. Determine his acceleration while stopping and the distance he traveled while stopping.

- An object is dropped from a tower, 153 ft above the ground. The object's height above ground t sec into the fall is s = 153 - 16t2. a. What is the object's velocity, speed, and acceleration at time t? b. About how long does it take the object to hit the ground? c. What is the object's velocity at the moment of impact? The object's velocity at time t is The object's speed at time t is ft / sec. The object's acceleration at time t is | ft/ sec2. (Simplify your answer.) It takes |sec for the object to hit the ground. (Round to the nearest tenth.) The object's velocity at the moment of impact is ft / sec. (Round to the nearest tenth.)arrow_forwardJosh went to play bowling in a nearby bowling alley. He threw the ball along the ramp toward the bowling pin. The distance between Josh and the pins were 8.8 m away. Furthermore, the ball rolled along the ramp in a rate of 2.4 m/s2. Bolt coasted across the finish line with a time of 9.69s. a. If we assume that Bolt accelerated for 2,63s to reach his maximum speed, and maintained that speed for the rest of the race, calculate his maximum speed and his constant acceleration. b.During the same Olympics, Bolt also set the world record in the 200-m dash with a time of 19.30 s. Using the same assumptions about acceleration time as for the 100-m dash, what was his maximum speed for this race?arrow_forward

What has the student actually described? Explain.arrow_forwardA hare and a tortoise compete in a race over a straight course 1.00 km long. The tortoise crawls at a speed of 0.200 m/s toward the finish line. The hare runs at a speed of 8.00 m/s toward the finish line for 0.800 km and then stops to tease the slow-moving tortoise as the tortoise eventually passes by. The hare waits for a while after the tortoise passes and then runs toward the finish line again at 8.00 m/s. Both the hare and the tortoise cross the finish line at the exact same instant. Assume both animals, when moving, move steadily at their respective speeds. (a) How far is the tortoise from the finish line when the hare resumes the race? (b) For how long in time was the hare stationary?arrow_forward
