Chapter 18, Problem 18.60AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The three letter shorthand notation that can be formed from Valine, Methionine and Leucine has to be identified.

Concept introduction:

Many amino acids are linked together through amide bonds to form a biologically large molecule known to be proteins.

Amino functional group is (NH2) and carboxyl functional group is (COOH) and a R group is considered as side chain, when all these are bonded to same carbon atom.

In protein the amide bond (CONH ) can link together with two amino acids to form a peptide bond. Link formation results from the release of water.

Draw the titration curves for the following AA’s: Aspartic acid, Alanine, Lysine, Valine, Serine, and Trrosine.
Draw the dipeptide alanylvaline.
The endorphins are a group of naturally occurring neurotransmitters that act in a manner like morphine to control pain. Research has shown that the biologically active parts of the endorphin molecules are simple pentapeptides called enkephalins. Draw the structure of the methionine enkephalin with the sequence Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met. Identify the N-terminal and C-terminal amino acids. Bradykinin is a nonapeptide that stimulates smooth muscle contraction, dilates blood vessels, causes pain, and is a component of bee venom. Give the IUPAC name of the nonapeptide. Note: The selected photo is the sequence of Bradykinin.
