To determine:
The method by which the immune system differentiates foreign cells from cells deemed as self.
Introduction:
The host has developed three lines of defense systems in which some are innate and nonspecific and some are acquired and specific. Non-specific host defense system protects the host from all pathogens whereas specific host defense system protects from specific pathogens. The three lines of defense system are the first line, second line and third line of the defense system.
(b)
To determine:
If viral infection might increase the chances of type I diabetes and explain this situation with a hypothesis and the role of PAMPs in this process.
Introduction:
Insulin is produced by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin regulates the concentration of blood glucose when the concentration is high. It causes the liver to convert excess glucose to glycogen, hence reducing the blood glucose concentration.

Microbiology: A Systems Approach
- Describe some intracellular host macromolecules that may be bound by steroid molecules to prevent an allergic response.arrow_forwardExplain the term hematopoietic growth factors (HGFs)?arrow_forwardA. The structural characteristics of the CTXA3 protein that allow it to interact with a membrane. B. Why it would preferentially interact with phosphatidylserine-rich membranes. C. How this interaction would cause leakage from the membrane.arrow_forward
- From the list below, identify which disease is not mediated by antibodies that bind to and alter the normal function of cell-surface receptors. a. insulin-resistant diabetes b. Goodpasture’s syndrome c. Graves’ disease d. hypoglycemia e. myasthenia gravis.arrow_forwardBased on Figure 2, which of the following best supports the claim that drug X inhibits oxygen consumption? a.In the absence of drug X, melanoma lines 1 and 4 consume similar amounts of oxygen. b.In the presence of drug X, melanoma line 2 consumes statistically more oxygen per cell than does melanoma line 3. c.Melanoma line 3 consumes statistically less oxygen per cell in the presence of drug X than it does in the presence of the solvent alone. d.Melanoma line 2 in the presence of drug X consumes statistically less oxygen than does melanoma line 4 in the absence of drug X.arrow_forwardExplain how the chemical messenger histamine is biosynthesized and how it elicits each symptom of inflammation.arrow_forward
- You are studying growth factor GFA, which you know stimulates the proliferation of goblet cells in theintestine.Goblet cells are responsible for producing and secreting mucin, a mixture of glycosaminoglycans thatprotects the intestinal wall. Some patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appear to have fewer goblet cells, thereforeless mucin and less protection from toxins and various other pro-inflammatory factors. These patients also have mutations in the gene encoding the GFA receptor (GFAR) in goblet cells,GFAR is a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) that autophosphorylates in response to GFA binding, thusbecoming active.QUESTION:explain what changes in GFAR could be caused by these IBD-associatedmutations and why.arrow_forward. Please explain the role of Ubiquitin Ligase Activity in the regulation of apoptotic cell death.arrow_forwarda. Explain why most immune reactions result in a polyclonalcollection of antibodies.b. How do monoclonal antibodies differ from this?c. Describe several applications of monoclonals in medicine.arrow_forward
- Explain why each choice (a-d) is correct or incorrect. Allergens differ from antigens because a. Allergens produce an abnormally large immune response to what is an otherwise harmless particle. b. Allergens do not involve the leucocytes, they simple stimulate the inflammatory response. c. Allergens are only active seasonally and are generally harmless to the body. d. Allergens are primarily plant derived while antigens are bacterial or viral in nature.arrow_forwardWhich of the following applies to the organization of the encircled region? a. There are about equal numbers of insulin-secreting B cells and glucagon-secreting A cells b. Some islets contain B cell sonly while others contain A cells only c. Islets have a uniform size and cellular composition throughout the pancreas d. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) e. A cells tend to form a peripheral mantle around B cells which are located centrally within the isletarrow_forwardDiabetes Mellitus is a condition characterised by the inability to effectively transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells, often resulting in high blood glucose levels. This is either because a person's pancreas is not producing sufficient amounts of insulin, the hormone that facilitates glucose uptake, or because their cells don't respond normally to the insulin they produce. Type 1 Diabetes (approximately 10% of all Diabetes cases) is an autoimmune disease, thought to be triggered by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Type 2 Diabetes (85-90% of all cases), while having a genetic component, is largely associated with poor nutritional choices and lack of exercise. Figure 1.
