A 10 station automated assembly system produces an ideal cycle time (Tc) of 14 seconds/cycle. When a defective part enters any assembly station it sometimes causes a station jam or stoppage. Defective parts occur at a rate of 0.07 and a jams due to defective parts occur at a rate of 0.4. When a jam occurs, it takes on average 74 seconds to clear and restart the station.
Determine the production rate of acceptable parts (Rap) to the nearest 1 part/hour.
The principles of process improvement suggest that an ineffective, inefficient process:
O Keeps non-value-adding activities off the critical path
Processes workpieces on a FIFO basis
Produces products in large batch sizes
Produces at the rate of customer demand
A manager wants to determine the number of containers to use for incoming parts for a kanban system to be installed next month. The process will have a usage rate of 80 pieces per hour. Because the process is new, the manager has assigned an inefficiency factor of .35. Each container holds 45 pieces, and it takes an average of 75 minutes to complete a cycle. How many containers should be used? As the system improves, will more or fewer containers be required?

- Jose just found out that at his part-time job in the restaurant, the manager was replacing all of the drink dispensers from the manual ones where Jose fills the cup after taking an order to automatic ones. The manager said that this would be faster and allow better consistency in the product delivered to the customer. Jose had his hours cut because less people can take twice as many orders as before. Jose and his restaurant has experienced which of the following? The using work center can handle 250 jobs per day. The average elapsed time for the entire cycle is currently .25 days. The company is concerned with the safety factor for the operation and the size of the containers. A: What is the efficiency rating of the current operation? B: If the company decides to use only one container, how many parts must it hold? C: If the safety factor is changed to .12 and there are still 2 containers, how many parts must each container now hold?arrow_forwardA manager wants to determine the number of containers to use for incoming parts for a kanban system to be installed next month. - Examples of companies that have used SMED One example of a company that succeeded with this system was Toyota, achieving a significant time reduction. Toyota used to take more than four hours to change models on an 800-ton stamping press, when its equivalent at Volkswagen required only two hours. Mention another company that has been successful with this system (SMED).arrow_forwardA U.S. Postal Service supervisor is looking for ways to reduce stress in the sorting department. With the existing arrangement, stamped letters are machine-canceled and loaded into tubs with 375 letters per tub. The tubs are then pushed to postal clerks, who read and key zip codes into an automated sorting machine at the rate of 1 tub per 375 seconds. To overcome the stress caused when the stamp canceling machine outpaces the sorting clerks, a pull system is proposed. When the clerks are ready to process another tub of mail, they will pull the tub from the canceling machine area. How many tubs should circulate between the sorting clerks and the canceling machine if 90,000 letters are to be sorted during an 8-hour shift, the safety stock policy variable, α, is 0.18, and the average waiting time plus materials handling time is 25 minutes per tub?arrow_forwardDesign process is non cyclical. Upon reporting for work, you noticed that some chain drive equipment are having too much slack. Adjusting the slack by stopping the equipment would be detrimental to the achievement of production target. You decided to have it corrected when the company goes into its scheduled preventive maintenance shutdown. What improvements would you do to correct and prevent this problem from happening? - A Battery manufacturer has recently received complaints from retailers that its 9-volt batteries are not lasting as long as other name brands. Jabu Xulu, the Quality executive believes that there is no problem because his batteries have had an average life of 50 hours, which is about 10% longer than competitor’s modes. To raise the lifetime above this level would require a new level of technology not available to this battery manufacturer. Nevertheless, he is concerned enough to set up hourly assembly line checks. Previously, after ensuring that the process was running properly, the company collected samples data of 9-volts batteries. Those samples are shown in the table following table: Hours (S A M PL E) 1 2 3 4 5 1 51 50 49 50 50 2 45 47 70 46 36 3 50 35 48 39 47 4 55 70 50 30 51 5 49 38 64 36 47 6 59 62 40 54 64 7 36 33 49 48 56 8 50 67 53 43 40…arrow_forwardEakins Enterprises makes model boats, and it is switching to a lean manufacturing process. At one assembly area, Eakins is using one part container that holds 240 parts, and it wants the output to be approximately 80 finished parts per hour; they also desire a 20 percent safety stock for this part.
