Education of Parents (Example 7) Each of 29 randomly sampled community college students reported the number of years of formal education for his or her mother and father. For example, a value of 12 means that the parent completed high school but had no further education. (The numbers ranged from 0 to 18.) The regression equation shown in the output is for predicting years of education for the father on the basis of years of education for the mother. Assume that all the conditions required for regression are fulfilled.

a. Identify the intercept. Explain what it would mean if the intercept were zero.

b. Use the output given to test the hypothesis that the intercept is 0. Show all the steps, and use a significance level of 0.05. The statistics for the test of the hypothesis that the intercept is 0 can be found in the row labeled “Constant.”
