Interpretation:
The condition that explains whether the system is in equilibrium or not has to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
The equilibrium state of a reaction is generally studied by equilibrium constant. It is the ratio of the concentration of products by concentration of reactants at equilibrium. The general equilibrium reaction is as follows:
Here,
The expression of the equilibrium constant for the above reaction is as follows:
Here,
Explanation of Solution
To examine whether the system is in equilibrium or not the equilibrium condition must be satisfied. The condition of equilibrium is a state of balance of processes that runs in opposite directions. At equilibrium, the formation of product from reactant balances the formation of reactant from the product. Also, the change in concentration of reaction and product seems to be negligible at equilibrium state.

- In Section 13.1 of your text, it is mentioned that equilibrium is reached in a closed system. What is meant by the term closed system. and why is it necessary to have a closed system in order for a system to reach equilibrium? Explain why equilibrium is not reached in an open system.arrow_forwardWrite a balanced chemical equation for a totally gaseous equilibrium system that would lead to the following equilibrium constant expression. Keq=[N2]2[H2O]6[NH3]4[O2]3arrow_forwardIn Section 17.3 of your text, it is mentioned that equilibrium is reached in a closed system. What is meant by the term “closed system,” and why is it necessary for a system to reach equilibrium? Explain why equilibrium is not reached in an open system.arrow_forward
- Describe a nonchemical system that is in equilibrium, and explain how the principles of equilibrium apply to the system.arrow_forwardIn the figure, orange fish are placed in one aquarium and green fish in an adjoining aquarium. The two tanks are separated by a removable partition that is initially closed. (a) Describe what happens in the first few minutes after the partition is opened. (b) What would you expect to see several hours later? (c) How is this system analogous to dynamic chemical equilibrium?arrow_forward
