Concept explainers
Advantage of making the objective lens larger in a refracting telescope.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A refracting telescope consists of two lenses basically, which is used to generate the image of a distant object. Out of the two lenses, the larger one is the objective lens.
To make the objective lens larger is to generate more power of the telescope because the power of the refracting telescope is directly proportional to the area of the objective lens. So, higher the area of the objective lens will lead to higher power of the telescope. More power means more light gathered that depicts the clearer image of the object. Hence, the objective lens is made larger in a refracting telescope.
Conclusion:
Hence, the advantage to making the objective lens larger in a refracting telescope is to get the clearer image due to more light generated.
