Explain why levels of gastrin are elevated during Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome?
The digestive system consists of various organs that begin from the mouth and end in the anus whose function is to break down the complex food molecules into simpler ones and absorb the nutrients into the body. The stomach is an important digestive organ that secretes various hormones and acids needed for the process of digestion.
Gastrin is a peptide hormone secreted by the G cells present in the stomach and the duodenum of the small intestine. This hormone stimulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid(HCl) during a meal, also supports gastric motility. High levels of circulating gastrin can cause disorders like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
