DEVELOPMENT IN DFW FOR PANAMA CANAL EXPANSION
For more than 160 years, BNSF has played a vital role in building and sustaining USA’s economy. They play the same role in the development in DFW (Dallas – Fort Worth) area for Panama Canal expansion. Texas Motor Transportation Association and Texas Association of Manufacturers also joining along with BNSF on the development process. Since the west coast may have trouble in handling expanded demand, Port of Houston may see more incoming goods as predicted by Texas state transportation. The Texas Department of Transportation is also working in a project for the betterment of DFW and also to utilize maximum benefit from the canal expansion.
It has been analyzed that development is needed in the following

BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad are the major companies that are working in railroad development in the DFW area.
The following steps have been proposed by the Railway authorities
1. Building and expanding on-dock rail facility
2. Building intermodal centers
3. Advancing other plans to accommodate an expected increase in freight traffic
4. Double stacked containers Figure: Double stacked container Rail
TRUCKS:
Almost all the freight transport involves truck participation because it provides last mile delivery to the destinations from the railheads. Trucks allows delivery to the distribution centers from the intermodal facilities. Figure: Trucks are being loaded Figure: Truck traffic from a Toll point
The freight technical advisory committee along with shippers and businesses like Walmart and Target are working on the development of Roadways required for the Panama Canal expansion.
The following steps have been proposed by the Roadway authorities
1. Developing a long range development plan to consider freight
2. Expanding the lanes of the roadways for heavier traffic flow
3. Providing maximum access to trucks to the port of Houston or to the nearest
Another project they are working on is the Lone Star Regional Rail project. TxDot is proposing a regional passenger rail service connecting
The reasons for this new transportation business is because of many changes in the transportation laws concerning the hours of service and not enough trucks to get the cargo around the states. The hours of service have been causing the markets
The workers started off by creating a railroad to cross over and deliver items/tools for the workers to use, while building the canal. They have to dig through the jungle and flatten out land. Once they were done with that they would dig and make river and stream holes. The workers would blow up the land connection to the river/stream hole to the ocean. That is so the water could get through the continent. Most of the workers came from African Areas or South America Areas. TNT (the bomb) was the object the workers would use to blow up the river/stream hold to the ocean.
Before the 1900s, in order to get from the Atlantic ocean to the pacific ocean, you had to go around South America then all the way up again to reach your destination. Everyone was getting tired of going the long way, until a French company that was lead by Ferdinand de Lesseps came up with the idea of making a canal through Panama. However, the French ended failing because of the obstacles that came their way. Later on the U.S. wanted to continue building the canal, plus they had more to gain from this canal. They got the permission to build a canal through Panama and began working. Of course many obstacles were faced, but finally on August 15, 1914, the canal was completed. Everyone was saying that the Panama Canal would change the face of
The Central Railway will make the trip either from Dallas to Houston or Houston to Dallas a much faster and more enjoyable trip. The high speed of the train will make a trip that could be 4 hours down to about “90 minutes by 2021” (Formby). The faster travel will lessen traffic to a dramatic difference. Besides being a fast train, this form of transportation will be environmentally safe. The Central Railway “consumes 1/8th less energy per seat and expends 1/12th carbon dioxide than a Boeing B777-200*” (Texas Central). Jere Thompson Jr. who has served on transportation committees and is currently the Dallas energy executive stated that the Texas Central Railway development “is ‘fantastic’ and ‘a remarkable opportunity,’” according to columnist
The team addresses that the main purpose of the study is to address long-term inter-regional transportation problems and opportunities and to consider alternative actions to addrees these issues as part of developing an integrated, multi-modal transportation system that permits the capable movement of people and goods, and provides better economic and transportation linkages between urban growth centres in the GTA west study area (figure 1) (Transportation development strategy report, 2012). In order to finalize the purpose of the study, the project team identified the specific transportation problems and opportunities within the study area (Transportation development strategy report, 2012). They developed, assessed and evaluated a range of Area Transportation System Alternatives to address the identified issues relating to transportation, and opportunities presented within the study area (Transportation development strategy report, 2012). Lastly, the team recommended a Transportation Development Strategy based on the Area Transportation System Alternatives supported onward from the assessment (Transportation development strategy report,
The advantages of building a canal through Central America were known long ago. Even at the time Christopher Columbus first arrived in the New World, it was evident that a short cut through Central America would be extremely beneficial, but there was never an incentive to build one until many years later. The increase in population and trade in California because of the California gold rush demonstrated the need for a faster and less costly trade route from western America to eastern America. This gave the United States motivation to make a shortcut, and in 1848 the United States built the trans-Panama railroad to satisfy this need (“Panama, city, Panama”). The railroad required a ship to dock and unload the cargo, and then another ship to
The Panama canal is an advanced canal for the time it was built. First of all the canal works as a lock system. The lock system can raise a ship up and down. Therefor the railroad system, was an extreme help to many people. The railroad system assisted in moving all the dirt and rock away from where they were building the canal. Building the canal employed people as workers to construct the Panama canal.
"With these big supercontainers, no one has really looked down the future and said, 'Are we ready for this?' We have a great opportunity: With where Texas is located and with inland ports, we can actually get a lot of freight out of Houston and up the major highways of Interstate 35 and 45.
The majority of movement of materials and goods across continents is through container ships, however, in some cases, planes are used to transport goods. Trucks and trains move materials and goods and within a country or a continent. In some cases, ships sail in rivers, as is the case in parts of Canada. The shares of freight transport as the percentage of the total tone-km by road, inland waterways, and railways in the EU are 75.9%, 6.7%, and 18.4% respectively (EUROSTAT, 2016). In the USA, trucks are the most used means of transportation for moving freight up to 750 miles. Trains move items in bulk beyond the 750-mile limit up to 2000 miles (United States Department of Transportation, 2015).
Trucking is well suited to present day business practices as it offers in time delivery of manufactured as well as retail goods.
Ports are basically a means of integration into the global economic system. Ports are basically a means of integration into the global economic system. As international barriers to trade have effectively been lifted by the WTO-agreements since the 1980s, global manufacturers have vertically disintegrated their production systems into geographically dispersed and flexibly organized supply chain systems. The development of deep sea ports as associate economic infrastructure assumes that like roads, communications and alternative economic infrastructures, ports have a positive impact on the expansion and development of states. Deep sea port development has positive effects on employment and revenue earnings of a rustic.. The cluster of activities
Competitive advantage. The concept of hauling over a hundred railcars with as little as two crew members allows for a distinct advantage over the trucking industry with regards to fuel and labor costs.
Initially, there is the mode of land transportation. Roads, rails and pipelines fall under this category. These land logistics are very important because they extend the delivery services for air and water transport from airports and seaports. The main transport mode of land logistics are railway, road freight and pipeline transport. The advantage of railway transport is that it has carrying capacity and lower influences by weather conditions
The transportation sector is continually evolving. Whether moving people or products by land, sea, or air, all transportation strategies need to balance proficient network design and operations with rising intricacy, government supervision, environmental accountability, security risks and demands for flexibility and performance from consumers. Transportation solutions saturate all facets of business and comprise about ten percent of all economic action. Global economic disruption and explosive fuel pricing are driving the need for more restricted operations, ground-breaking service offerings, and inspired business models. The capability to manage change and drive continual process improvements are vital to transportation enterprises that want to uphold competitive advantage and survivability (Transportation and Logistics, n.d.).
