Summary Introduction

To review:

The given blank space in the statement, “____________ have peptidoglycan in their __________, but _________do not.”

Introduction:

The bacteria have been evolved from archae, but both of them are significantly different form each other. While the bacterial cell walls have peptidoglycan in their cell walls, the archae do not have peptidoglycan layer.

Explanation of Solution

The peptidoglycan is the polymer of sugars and amino acids, which makes the bacterial cell walls strong. Instead of peptidoglycan, the archae have pseudopeptidoglycan in their cell walls. The archae like, methanogens have pseudopeptidoglycan layer, called as pseudomeurin in their cell walls, which help in providing strength to its cell walls.

The overall structure of the peptidoglycan is similar to the archae peptidoglycan, except for the presence of N-acetyltalosaminuronic acid, instead of N-acetylmuramic acid. The two sugars of N-acetyltalosaminuronic acid are linked by the β-1, 3-glycosidic linkage in the archae cell wall, instead of β-1, 4-glycosidic linkage in the bacterial cell walls.

Conclusion

Bacteria have peptidoglycan in their cell walls, but archae do not.
