Question

why might bodybuilders take aromatase inhibitors?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Aromatase inhibitors inhibit the activity of the enzyme aromatase. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of androgens (testosterone) to estrogen through the process of aromatization. They are used for the treatment of breast cancer patients that are positive for the hormone receptor. The examples of a few aromatase inhibitors are letrozole, anastrozole, and exemestane. The drugs letrozole and anastrozole are nonsteroidal and competitively inhibits the aromatase enzyme. Exemestane is a steroid-based irreversible inhibitor of aromatase.
