Question

Where in mitochondria does the process called respiratory chain occur? Which are the products of the Krebs cycle used in that final phase of the aerobic respiration?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Cellular respiration is a process in which the complex organic molecules are oxidized to generate energy in the form of ATP.  These complex organic molecules are known as respiratory substrates and the by-products are carbon dioxide and water. Mitochondria are cell organelles present in aerobic eukaryotes that take part in oxidative phosphorylation and Krebs cycle of aerobic respiration.

Step 2

During glycolysis and Krebs cycle, after the dehydrogenation of respiratory substrates, the released hydrogen is accepted by certain coenzymes such as NAD and FAD. After accepting the hydrogen, they get reduced into NADH2 and FADH2 respectively.

The conversion of these reduced coenzymes back to their oxidized form is done by transferring the electrons by electron carriers in a step-wise process. During the process formation of ATP (phosphorylation) and molecular water takes place by oxidization of the removed hydrogen with the atmospheric oxygen (terminal oxidation).
