Question
What design do the built-up sections require?
Expert Solution
Step 1
The built-up section is also known as a compound beam. it is generally used when the rolled steel beam is not able to provide enough section modulus for span or does not enough to withstand when the magnitude of the bending moment is too high. Sometimes drawing small depths of the beam does not enough to provide enough section modulus, so in these cases, plates are used to provide the beam.
The different designs of the built-up sections are shown depending on the requirement.
(a)
The above design used for small span and heavy loads.
Step 2
(b)

Step 3
(c)
The above design used for large spans and heavy loads.
