Sinus refers to cavities present in the skull and facial bones. These are hollow but are lined by soft mucosal tissue. There are four sinus pairs in humans which are frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid and maxillary.
The sinus have bacterial colonization in them which form normal microbiota. These include Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, diphtheroids etc. as major species.
In case, certain minor species such as Pneumococcus spp. increase in the sinuses, can cause infections such as pneumococcal pneumonia, sinusitis etc. Other serious problems include rhinosinusitus.
Certain infections can spread to brain and can cause encephalitis etc.
