Researchers investigated whether the type of music playing in a waiting area affected people's shyness. Stu- dents from a sample of N = 15 were randomly assigned to one of three music conditions (silence, pop, or funky jazz). Each student was led into a room where the music was playing and asked to sit and wait for the experimenter to call them in. There was a row of 12 chairs in the room and a confederate of the experimenter, pretending to be another participant, was already seated in the first chair.
