Expert Solution
Step 1

Streptococcal infection caused by group of bacteria called streptococcus bacteria.

Streptococci are divided into two key groups:

1. alpha (α)-haemolytic Streptococci - These are common type and many strains live naturally in humans. These can split into 2 groups:

  • Streptococcus pneumoniae :- This usually found on the surface of skin and throat. It transmitted through cough and sneeze. It causes infection both adults and children.
  • Viridans Streptococci :- This group mainly found in the mouth , gut and genital region. Most serious infection occurs when bacteria enters into other regions of the body. For example endocarditis occurs when viridans enters into bloodstream.

2. beta (β)-haemolytic Streptococci

β-haemolytic Streptococci are characterized as Group A Streptococci (GAS) and Group B Streptococci (GBS)

Step 2

Group A Streptococci can be transmitted through cough , sneeze or direct contact.

Group B Streptococci (GBS) lives harmlessly in digestive system and female genitals. It can be transmitted through sexually or from mother to baby during birth.

List the drugs commonly used to treat streptococcal infection:

1. Levofloxacin

2. Penicillin VK

3. Levaquin

4. Penicillin v potassium

5. Bicillin L-A

6. Penicillin g potassium

7. Procaine penicillin
