5.1 From the case study above, identify and discuss the risk factors that increased the risk of Thabo developing allergies. 5.2 Explain how you would know if Thabo is not perhaps suffering from an intolerance instead of an allergy?
Question 5
Maria is a South African woman with an 8 month of old baby boy, Thabo. They live in an area of Soweto,
where in the winter months most people make use of paraffin stoves and wooden fires to keep
warm and cook. Maria gave birth to Thabo in January 2023 and breastfed him until she went back
to work after two months of maternity leave. Since then, she gave Thabo formula milk during the
day and breastfed him in the night and mornings. When Thabo turned four months, she gave him
thin maize meal porridge in the evenings to help him sleep better. Soon afterwards she gave him
other foods which are typically eaten by the rest of the family. They love to cook stew with red
meat and potatoes; or buys a ‘kota’ (quarter of white bread loaf with French fries, Russian
sausages, cheese and sauces). Maria dislikes eggs, green vegetables, fish, and peanuts so she
hardly ever buys these and has never offered these foods to Thabo. She makes use of hard brick
margarine and sunflower oil in cooking. Recently Thabo developed a skin rash. When Maria took
Thabo to the clinic, the nurses confirmed an allergy but has not yet identified what he is allergic
to. As part of his routine check-up, the nurses indicated that Thabo’s weight for age is high.
