Let us go back to Renée Richards, why was Richards able to play in a woman’s sport after going through surgery and becoming a woman? The answer lies in the process, Richards went through surgery which included hormone treatment. Zack Ford, a writer for Thinkprogress.org published a piece on August 8, 2016, entitled, No, Allowing Transgender Athletes to Compete Won’t Destroy Women’s Sports. Ford makes some very compelling arguments and points out that many different organizations already allow transgender athletes to compete and they have not had any problems. Ford points out that women sports already have women with a physiques that seem to be a huge advantage, like 6’ 8” Brittany Griner in the WNBA. Ford’s major flaw is that sites the Olympics as one of the …show more content…
This seems like a fair claim, then, by Ford. Furthermore, it seems fair to say that the science of hormones is also on Ford’s side and against those who oppose transgender individuals in women’s sports. However, “The Olympics are reportedly opening the field of competition to transgender athletes by adopting an updated policy that reflects standards already adopted by other regulatory sports organizations.”9 That was written by Christina Kahrl, an ESPN staff writer in an article that she wrote entitled, IOC opening field of competition to trans athletes with new policy. Kahrl states that these new criteria allow for “broader policies for the inclusion of transgender athletes.”10 The main issue with the new criteria is that it would allow either male-to-female or female-to-male transgender athletes to chose in which competition they would like to compete without having surgery. Kahrl, also mentions that these new standards would be in line with the current standards of the NCAA, meaning that this is already the case with the
Next, male-to-female athletes have an unfair advantage when it comes to having a generally bigger skeletal frame. It is commonly known that men in general are designed to be stronger than women. This is largely due to their bigger bone structure and larger muscle mass. These two anatomical forces when energetically combined become powerful forces of speed, strength, and endurance which are all characteristics of a great athlete. Many transgender individuals choose to undergo hormone therapy to help change their appearance into looking more feminine or masculine. However, in the case of transgender athletes who desire to compete in the Olympics, the IOC has required male-to-female athletes to undergo two years of hormone treatment in
Imagine having a sister, daughter, or female friend competing in a sport like girls wrestling. Of course, we are hoping they will do their best and have a fair match. Wrestling is a highly competitive sport when all the athletes are competing under the same rules. We would assume that all athletes competing in female sports are abiding by these rules, and the rules equally apply to all athletes competing. However, there are transgender boys (female to male) who take testosterone and compete in female sports. This is unfair because non-transgender females cannot take doses of testosterone while competing in sports due to it being a performance enhancer. Transgender boys must take doses of testosterone to assist in their transition. The testosterone is medically necessary; hence, it is allowed in many sports leagues. However, league rules need to change. Transgender boys while on testosterone should not be allowed to compete in girls’ sports.
The continuing issue of the past has now turned into an obvious issue in our current society. Ladies these days have opportunities that were not reachable in past decades, but rather should overcome, or by and large disregard, the hindrance of being rebuffed over the long haul for basically being a lady. Does not matter what gender you are, your gender shouldn’t determine your ability, if that individual takes care of business right, he or she ought to be paid for doing as such, if not, that individual gets repercussions. The impact of sexual orientation on this issue is exceptionally inquisitive in the matter of why it is even a component in any case. It is broadly acknowledged all through today 's general public that sports is a man 's game. Ladies have been basically avoided from playing sports and also not being equalized as men. Ladies are
When it comes to talking about sports,it is all about the enthusiasm a reporter puts into it. For example you would probably much rather listen to a person who sounds pumped and energetic instead of someone who sounds bored out of their mind. Lets compare these two reporters talking about both a man and woman baseball player hitting a home run “a sports anchor discussed a Giancarlo Stanton hit: ‘‘Wow! Take another look at this one. He just absolutely destroys them! You can see the speed on that swing in real time. And you just stand and admire a shot like that.’’ Later, a sports analyst gushed over Yoenis Céspedes:‘‘Céspedes kept getting better and better, and the home runs kept getting longer and longer and the numbers got bigger and bigger.” Cheryl Cooky put this together and notice how Stanton gets all this glory but Cespedes hardly gets any recognition and the announcer makes the home runs seem boring.
There are so many issues when it comes to gender roles, gender norms, and gender identities. Many men and women in today’s society freely choose the way they want to present themselves to society; which is either masculine or feminine. A lot of these characteristics are accepted, and a lot are not accepted in society today. There are many social stigmas that come along with being a female athlete; meaning there is major social criticism with how they choose to present themselves to society. Gender is a symbol for a strong system of norms that analyzes and leads the behavior of men and women (Schur 1984; Blinde and Taube 1992).
Only recently have women been able to compete in a very public way, with established leagues, payrolls and plenty of endorsement opportunities. Title IX has allowed teams of girls for almost every sport as well as better opportunities for sports scholarships to college and many other privileges only given to boys for their talents in sports. Under all these legal provisions and establishments for the encouragement of women in sports, women should now really be able to do any kind of sport they want in as much freedom as is afforded to men in sports.
One of my earliest memories as a child was watching my friends playing soccer in our barrio right in front of Grandma’s house. Although many still believe soccer is a sport exclusively deserved for boys, girls have shown passion and tremendous sportsmanship for the game. The fever of futbol increases during the world cup. For me, it’s almost impossible to follow all the important leagues out there, but I don’t miss any games during the cup. I know, typically of women right? Well, no. Let’s talk about the magnificent performance of the women’s national team. You can blame Hope Solo if you want, but this team has given a brilliant performance. Yes my friends, women we can play soccer too!
The International Olympic Committee has had a controversial history with the topic of gender testing. It was a big topic back in 2009 with Caster Semeya where she was banned to participate in the olympics. Around 2012 the debate was should transgender women be able to compete in the women's sports. Many in sports are trying to decide weather it necessary and moral.
The female eligibility requirements established by the International Association of Athletics Federation and the International Olympic Committee are unethical and discriminatory. According to these governing boards, it is acceptable to prohibit female athletes with hyperandrogenism from competing at sanctioned events. However, according to Katrina Karkazis of the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics, these guidelines are unfounded and essentially disbar female athletes who “are (considered) “too masculine” to compete with other women” (IAAF 2011c, 1). These restrictions are sexist and discriminate against female athletes who don’t exemplify the feminine gender stereotype.
This research paper will explore ideas and articles related to gender and sports. Research covered will include perceptions of gender-themed characteristics of sport, the role athletics plays in the reproduction of female marginality in society, and gender roles and their formation for male and female school-aged students in relation to sports. Also covered will be information and research on the history and implications of sex and gender testing and verification. After reviewing these articles, I will provide my own insights on the research and areas that I believe would benefit from further investigation.
As a professional in sports there are a lot of regulations to competing. Women have to be gender tested in order to compete in any sport higher than a college level like the Olympics or World Games. This is so the officials can make sure no men are registering as women. If they come back with any signs of being male they are automatically disqualified. Although some people think that women with both male and female chromosomes have an advantage over normal women in the Olympics, they actually don’t because they can’t help this. It is not fair that women are disqualified for failing a gender test because of the way they were born.
The gender verification has become a major controversy for women’s sports. The International of Olympic Committee (IOC) motto is promoting fairness among the gender equalities (IOC 2014). However, the purpose of the verification method is to create a fair competitive sports game for female athletes. According to Medical Dictionary, the definition of “Gender Verification Sex chromosome testing in the Olympic Games, to prevent genetic males from masquerading as females in womens’ events” (Gender Verification 2014). There are worrisome about potential male transgender that are competing in women’s sports (Teetzelhttp 2014) Gender verifications can be considered a good method to sustain the integrity of sport, but the procedure of examining the athletes demands to be modified. The IOC requirements are to determine and verify the aspects of genetic and characteristic of the female athletes. Gender verification has not only become problematic but it has harmed the reputation of those who are not male origin that are accused of being male.
Sports are supposed to be a place in which people from all different walks of like come together and compete on a “level” ground. You will never reach a true level ground because people will always be born with more naturally ability than others and so excluding people because you think they have an unfair advantage would be idiotic. I think when you start to exclude people from participating you start to take away the whole purpose of events like the Olympics. Those who compete in the Olympics are way more gifted than 99% of the worlds but society doesn’t claim that it is unfair that they were born with that ability because we know that they can’t change that. I think we should hold the same point of view when it comes to intersex individuals.
The rule states that transgender athletes can participate without having surgery (“IOC rules transgender,” 2016). The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the committee that came up with this rule. “Transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in the Olympics and other international events without undergoing sex reassignment surgery, according to new guidelines adopted by the IOC” (“IOC rules transgender,” 2016, para. 1). As a committee we want to make sure that there is a fair playing field for every athlete. We understand that some athletes will not agree with this, but I really do think that it is important for individuals to live out their dream. Even if they do chose to because a different gender. We will never put individuals in a position where they feel that it is unfair. We will do everything for the best interest of the
Intersex and transsexual labeling especially create problems in sports where athletes must compete with as female or male. Transgender differs from intersex such that transgender people feel they live in a body of the wrong gender hence seeking hormone therapy while intersex have abnormal sex organs. Both kinds of people want the right to choose their gender and may seek hormones and surgery to do so. One such example is an ophthalmologist Richard Raskind who underwent surgery to become Rene Richards and competed on the professional women’s tennis circuit creating a huge controversy. Another example is of South African runner Caster Semenya,
