College Athletes Paid to Play The amount of money made over the past twelve years in football and basketball has increased to about 300%, which helps fund all other sports (Meshefejian). College coaches are receiving a numerous amount of money for what the players are doing out on the court or field. Also, some athletes feel they need to excel more in the sport than in the classroom which can jeopardize their future. Student-athletes have other costs they need to pay for, but they have no time for a job due to practices, workouts, and games. College athletes should be paid for playing at the collegiate level, because they would focus more on academic studies, have an easier time paying for extra costs, and the colleges earn enough money …show more content…
Ticket sales, advertising, and merchandise help colleges produce hundreds of millions of dollars through college sports (Nocera and Williams). College-athletes, especially from D1 universities, are there to help the school produce money. A major part of a school’s profit is coming from the athletic department and they are even saving money too. Athletic departments are considered part of the educational system and do not need to pay taxes on sponsors, tv broadcasting, and season tickets (Eitzen). For example, March Madness is a popular event that is televised every year; some teams have even created their own broadcasting systems. Universities and coaches are supplying enough money that the athletes could receive some pay as well. While playing a sport in college, athletes have other various costs as well. A survey taken in 1989 of college football players resulted in 31% of players that gambled illegally, but 48% of people knew a player that gambled. Players are giving out team information to gamblers, so they can bet more accurately on the game to win money (Porto). Athletes do not have any extra time for a job, so it is difficult for them to make money. The players are taking a risk to gamble, which is illegal by the NCAA. Furthermore, the student-athletes will do whatever it takes to make some money to help pay for other costs in college. According to opposing views, the argument has arisen that some
College athletics is a billion dollar industry and has been for a long time. Due to the increasing ratings of college athletics, this figure will continue to rise. It’s simple: bigger, faster, stronger athletes will generate more money. College Universities generate so much revenue during the year that it is only fair to the players that they get a cut. College athletes should get paid based on the university’s revenue, apparel sales, and lack of spending money.
College athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools each year, yet they are not allowed to be compensated beyond a scholarship due to being considered amateurs. College athletes are some of the hardest working people in the nation, having to focus on both school courses and sports. Because athletics take so much time, these student-athletes are always busy. College football and basketball are multi-billion dollar businesses. The NCAA does not want to pay the athletes beyond scholarships, and it would be tough to work a new compensation program into the NCAA and university budgets. College athletes should be compensated in some form because they put in so much time and effort, generating huge amounts of revenue.
Athletes today are remarkably faster and stronger than ever before. There is a man named Haile Gebrselassie who ran a marathon in 2 hours. Mike Powell has a long jump record of 29 ft.These athletes are setting new records, creating high standards and making names for themselves. When it comes to college athletes, there is a lot of thought about whether they should get paid for all of their hard work and revenue they bring into their schools. These athletes are making names for themselves and for their schools, but they aren’t professionals. College sports are the pathway to possibly becoming a professional and making a career out of athletics. Although they aren’t professionals, they work hard every day and don’t have time to make any kind of other money. Should these athletes get paid on top of scholarships and other benefits for playing their sport?
How would you feel if you were on your own, given a place to sleep, are working hard at school and in a physical activity, but were never given any wage for how hard you worked physically, and going to bed almost emaciated? The sad truth is that this actually is the case for some college students playing sports. Do you think that college athletes should be paid? This was the article that I chose to read. These college students at no time collect any type of salary for working hard for other people. I feel that these college students never should go to bed hungry, and should be paid for being on their college's sports teams.
College athletics are a huge part of the culture of the university and sports. The best of the best high school athletes go on to compete at an even bigger platform and competition through college sports. Universities put in money through recruitment to find the right kind of athlete for their school. These athletes, through all their hard work and commitment, are rewarded different scholarships to continue their sports. At the top level of college sports, athletes receive a plentiful scholarship of full tuition and room and board. That type of scholarship can range from $100,000 to even a $180,000 depending on the school. Other students at the same university, who are not playing sports, are expected to cover this tuition themselves. This large sum encourages athletes to put all their time and resources to the sport that they came to school to play. Even with the scholarship money that is given, some believe that college athletes should be paid to play their sports. This is a problem especially at the highest levels in NCAA football and basketball. NCAA sports have a unique competitive atmosphere that also encourages education; however, that would be lost if college athletes were being paid to play.
In America people are paid for virtually anything nowadays; but for some reason we hold our superiorly achieving college athletes to a different moral standard where they showcase their highly profitable talents for free. College athletes such as Ben Simmons and Lonzo Ball, whose names alone bring in sell out crowds everywhere they go, are not paid, yet bring in insurmountable of profit to universities that not otherwise be possible. This begs the question: Do college athletes deserve to be paid for their time, skill, and profit they bring to the universities? College athletes should get paid for their play due to the fact that their job is working for their teams, the university makes enormous amounts of money off of them, and sometimes a
Backround Paragraph- The NCAA has deloped ten million dollars in ticket sales (Koba). This goes to all the coaches, athletic trainers, and assistants, so basically everyone, but the athletes. The coaches and evryone helps a lot, but its the athletes that play the hardest and do the most for the teams. Here are some reasons why this, paying college athletes should come into play and help them live.
If you were an avid sports player growing up; you have presumptuously dreamt about becoming a professional athlete. Living in that big house, playing in front of thousands and potentially millions, and earning that big salary not only for you, but everyone who helped you along the journey. Stephen Curry, a point guard for the Golden State Warriors has just attained a salary of $34,382,550. What the Golden State Warriors are paying Steph Curry may seem like an insurmountable sum of money, but what they pay him is returned in some form or another. Whether it be through ticket sales to see him play, jersey purchases, or just straight up publicity, Steph Curry earns that salary. According to bankrate.com, Curry’s net worth is $60,000,000, the
There has been a major discussion recently if a college athlete should earn money while they are in school. Many people think that College athletes , but it is better for college athletes to paid for many reasons. College athletes should be paid because the NCAA is a billion dollar enterprise. Moreover College players should earn revenue because of how much time and effort they spend trying to get better and help their team win. When athletes do well in a sport they bring a great deal of attention to the school. Student athletes aren’t just regular students, they are people who help generate money and market for schools. Even though student -athletes generates tons of money for the school, none of that money ever trickles down to them.
Paying college athletes is a very controversial subject. There are pro’s and con’s to both sides of the subject. In my unprofessional opinion I believe that college athletes should be paid. Coming from a student athlete I know how much hard work and dedication is required to be successful on the field/court wherever the sport is taken place, let alone in the classroom. In 2011-2012 the NCAA reported $876.1 million dollars in revenue. Basketball generated roughly $293 million, baseball generated roughly $419 thousand and football the rest. The University of Texas generated more than $93 million in 2011-2012.(“How Much Money Do College Sports Generate?” ) I believe the NCAA makes more than enough money to have a flat rate pay for each player
Your dream has come true; you're at college playing the sport you love, and at what cost? None. You are free to live your college life worry free and have been given the opportunity to continue your sports career. After you have completed your college education you can get a job, with no college loans that you have to pay off. You are also able to start making money right out of graduation. You get to experience this less stressful college life. The lives of athletes that walk-on and athletes not on a scholarship are stressful ones with many different things to worry about. Those athletes have to worry about how to pay for college and the loans they will have to pay back after graduation. They will have to pay for all their meals, books and the cost for dorms. But what got you here? There were many factors, but one that helped you the most was that you were a diverse athlete.
In trying to decide what research topic I wanted to use, I took many ideas into thought. I decided that the one idea that interests me most is whether student athletes should be paid or not. This is very intriguing to me since my master’s program is sports management. In order to do this research there must be many ways to use research as well as ideas from other people. This project is a very big topic in today’s discussion amongst sport fans, college administrators, and student athletes themselves. Media has recently put more pressure on this topic as well with the Northwestern decision to unionize as well as pointing out an athletic director gaining an $18,000 supplement for a wrestler at their school winning a national
They have to put so much time and hours out of their life into this sport that they do not have time for a steady income job. The National Collegiate Athletic Association has its fair share of strict rules and policies it must go by. Some of these rules are fair to the athletes considering the context, but some are absolutely ridiculous. For example, McMullen showed this situation, “If you’re a backup kicker for the 2017 national champion UCF Knights, and you can make money on YouTube with trick-shot videos, NCAA President Mark Emmert and his $2 million salary shouldn’t give you an ultimatum between that and your scholarship.” This student athlete came up with a creative way to make money for himself in his free time by doing trick shot videos on his YouTube account, but when the NCAA found out about this, they made him choose between his scholarship and his source of income. He had to choose his scholarship in order to complete his degree. There was a situation where an athlete named Kanavis McGhee’s mother could not afford her rent so he asked his football recruiter John Luchs to help him out. Luchs helped him with hope to build a bond with this kid and hopefully get him to join his team. John Luchs was eventually caught and suspended for his actions of paying players and doing a good deed to help an athlete who did not have enough money in his family
To verify all of this, college athletes are manipulated every day. Student athletes are working day in and day out to meet academic standards and to keep their level of play competitive. We as athletes need to be rewarded and credited for their achievements. Not only are athletes not being rewarded but they are also living with no money. Because the athletes are living off of no money they are unable to resist to taking money from boosters and others that are willing to help them out. College athletics need a reform. Student athletes need to start being rewarded monetarily for their hard work and dedication. They have limited time to work, and somehow, they need to make money. If the athletes are allowed to receive money for their commitments, then it will allow them to have spending money to enjoy themselves when they do have free
Do you think it is unfair that college athletes work so hard and don’t get paid? Yes, it is unfair because they literally work over half of their week practicing and they never have time to get a job and provide for themselves, and never get to see their families and friends and they miss holidays and birthdays. While some believe college athletes are already fairly compensated through scholarships and other perks. College athletes should get paid because college sports are like a jobs, and you are their so much you don't have time to get a job. Also they work so hard they deserve some money!
