When Silas Deane boarded the ship that would take him back to America he was not expecting it to be the cause of his demise. Formerly the American attaché to France during the Revolutionary War, Deane was ousted from his position when it was revealed he was selling secrets to the English. Not having anywhere else to go, Deane lived in Belgium for a time until he went to England. Eventually he saw it safe enough to make the trip to America, and not be prosecuted for his wrongdoings that occurred during the Revolutionary War. Whether he would be truly accepted back into the United States or not, it would never be found out due to Deane’s mysterious death on the passage over to the United States. Deane’s death on the surface appears to be a suicide, but if looked at closely it could have been a murder. Silas Deane was most murdered by Edward Bancroft because of Bancroft’s motive, Bancroft’s knowledge of poisons, and the lack of evidence found to …show more content…
During the Revolutionary War while Bancroft and Deane lived together in France Edward Bancroft acted as a double agent (p. xxvi) for the United States and England. Deane, who was living with Bancroft at the time (p. xxv), could have easily known about Bancroft’s dealings. In order to clean his own reputation with the United States, Deane would have had to gain back their trust somehow. If he used his hypothetical knowledge of Bancroft’s double-crossing for his own purposes it would have surely put him back into the United States’ favor. If Deane went back to the United States, Bancroft would have a possibility of being publically ousted as a traitor. Killing Deane would have prevented any opportunity of the sort from arising. With the motive to kill Deane, Bancroft becomes a suspect for his possible
It is believed that Benedict Arnold was a great general in the revolutionary war. He fought beside George Washington in the continental army. When he was a general for the continental army he had a couple of successful raids and took over british forts. He was also promoted to colonel by Benjamin church. He was doing great during his time with the continental army and his comrades trusted him, and he was praised for his successful attacks. Even though, a couple of his companions did bully and mess with him, they still found him useful when it came to taking over british forts and achieving bountiful attacks towards the british. He even got hurt during an attack on the british. George Washington sent Arnold to attack Quebec where he hurt his knee. As a result, his attack in Quebec failed miserably. This really shows that Benedict arnold was trying his best to be great man and do what was right. After Arnold had done so many
The reasons why he started talking to the British was that he was really irritated with the American government for not considering him as a significant person. The American government did not consider him as a statesman, and loyal was that they thought Arnold used the army for his personal needs. In addition, Arnold went to the British side because he was not getting sufficient money from the American government, and he had a lot of debt to pay. The British offered Benedict Arnold lot money, to him to join into the British forces. The British also assured that he will be in a high seat in the British, but the British never trusted him because the fact that he is working for the British army now, would not change the fact that he is American.
Later, we found out that Silas Deane’s long time friend Edward Bancroft was double-dealing of sorts, Bancroft was a known spy to the Americas but no one knew that he was also a spy for the British as well until British documents from that time were released to the public library; we then learned that Edward Bancroft was on the payroll as a spy for the British. Then several wondered if Deane knew that his long time friend was a double spy, many believed so. After learning more into the friendship of these
Known for his betrayl against the Continental Army, Benedict Arnold is most remembered for becoming a turncoat during the Revolutionary War. But, before switiching sides Benedict was a strong military leader and an excellent soldier. And, on both sides of the war, Benedict had great victories. Through his patriotic and traitorous acts, Benedict Arnold helped shape the course of the American Revolution.
Studying history can be an active, often arduous process, dependent on making assumptions with the evidence available and proving those assumptions to be correct or otherwise. But it can also be an easy task if done incorrectly, one of cutting corners and assuming falsehoods to be true for the sake of convenience. This is the way that many historians, amateur or professional, approach history. Not only does this approach exclude any possibility for well-constructed conclusions to be made, it can also leave the populace ignorant of the truth. In “The Strange Death of Silas Deane”, James West Davidson and Mark Hamilton Lytle argue that history is not merely the act of collecting data-rather of making assumptions about the data-through the use of countless rhetorical questions, paragraph organization, and a sardonic tone.
The battle of Quebec during 1775 is one of the many battles that took place during the American Revolution. It is a famous battle that at the time seemed to diminish the hopes of the Americans to force Britain out of America. The American rebels were split into two armies that were to head up from opposite sides of the Montreal/Quebec area and force the British out of that area so they could take over. The main reason the Americans wanted to gain control of this area was in hope that the French Canadians would join the American revolution, and help send the British back across the Atlantic Ocean. Britain could not hang onto Montreal, but they easily hung onto Quebec and they forced the American army to back off and after that night, the American forces never made an effort to try to take control of that area again. One man who was part of the American forces at that point was Benedict Arnold. He is known as the biggest traitor in American history, but he is an important face of the American Revolution at this time. “In 1780, Arnold deflected to the British, and his change from Patriot to traitor is one of the most compelling narratives in American history.” His journey through the forests of Maine leading up to the battle of Quebec is a story to behold and when one begins to understand the story of the journey, then they will realize that the long and hard trip to the destination is a huge contributor to the reason why the rebels lost that battle.
Although Benedict Arnold was a traitor to America in the American Revolution, he was a somewhat valuable general. Benedict Arnold did retire from his position after the soldiers repeatedly complained about him. This happened because of his hot temper, impulsiveness, and impatience. With these not-so-great traits about him, it earned him many enemies that would accuse him of false actions.
Romeo and Juliet, the Shakespearean playwright of two star crossed lovers, ends in two tragic deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. Who can be hold responsible for their deaths, when so many things went wrong along the way? Many could be held responsible for the deaths of the two lovers, but Romeo himself deserves to carry the heavier load of responsible for not only his death, but the death of his lover, Juliet as well. The young boy’s acts of irresponsibility, impulse, belligerence, immaturity, and streak of bad decisions only brought definite consequences to both himself and Juliet.

“The Strange Death of Silas Deane” by James West Davison and Mark Hamilton Lytle creates a new perspective on what people see history as. Although many people would define history as something that happened in the past, through “The Strange Death of Silas Deane”, the authors demonstrate that this everyday view on history can be profoundly misleading.
He was put on the lounge inside of the card room where he soon died. Furthermore, Virgil was shown as being shot in the arm earlier that same night. In reality, Virgil was shot several months prior to this incident (Eldridge).
Washington desperately needed to gain intelligence of General William Howe’s next plan of attack, however there were few who wanted to risk partaking in such a dishonorable task as spying. Hale was the first, and most well known, of the many spies to scout

Some instances became forgotten when trying to rebuilt Avon’s empire. The death of DeAndre was glanced over as a simple suicide, while those closest to him had their doubts. Once McNulty came asking questions to DeAndre’s baby mamma, her relentless questions made his mother to connect the dots. Stepping in with her motherly instincts, she realized if any justice was to come, it would be from her. Bringing up the issue amongst the gang leaders brought tension between Avon and Stringer. While Avon continued to disagree with Bell’s action for B&B enterprises, Stringer gives information to the cops to have Avon locked up again. Therefore, justice finds both of them with a simple question raised by DeAndre’s mother. Since utilitarianism focuses
