The Giver by Lois Lowry is about a utopian society where there are rules for basically everything that people do. However, after reading the book, I realized that the community truly is not a utopian society but rather a dystopian society. The reasons why the seemingly utopian society is actually a dystopia is because there is no evidence of love, no colors, and the process of eliminating community members is harsh.

The current Receiver of Memory, or The Giver, transmits the memories of the world to Jonas that only he possesses. These memories are given to Jonas so when The Giver is gone Jonas has all of the knowledge to advise and counsel the Committee of Elders whenever an unfamiliar problem presents itself. As Jonas starts to receive memories, he realizes there are many things the community has not experienced. He learns about color, nature, beauty, love, and family. However, he is also exposed to painful memories of loneliness, loss, war, poverty, and death. Many aspects of community life now seem frustrating and depressing to Jonas. He understands that the community was just trying to preserve their society as he said himself, “We really have to protect people from the wrong choices”, yet he sees how negative it is in the fact that it deadens the richness of life (99). The GIVER is a Dystopia.I know this because a dystopia is a world where they do not get to do what they want they can not and that is just like the GIVER. So basically they can't wear what they want or work where they wont or have there own kids it is crazy.

The community of The Giver is a dystopia. It is a dystopia because you don’t get to make the choices you want. You don’t get to decide how many children you have. You also have to share a dream called the stirrings. Another thing you have to do is when you turn twelve you have to go to the Ceremony Of Twelve.

There are many different interpretations that focus on different topics, one of the important being the role of memory. Jonas is part of a community that somewhen decided to erase pain by erasing everyone's memory. This allows them to create the “perfect” utopian society, where everybody lives in happiness and no dangers of anyone having any urges to do anything that will disturb the community’s happiness. However, Jonas discovers that memory and the pain and suffering that often accompanies it is necessary to truly live. According to the text, the Giver states, "There's much more. There's all that goes beyond – all that is Elsewhere – and all that goes back, and back, and back. I received all of those, when I was selected. And here in this room, all alone, I re-experience them again and again. It is how wisdom comes. And how we shape our future." (p.98). This quote shows how important memories are in order to make sense of everything and live a true life. In the book “The Giver” it is trying to keep their community like a utopia. They are trying to accomplish this goal by keeping it in “Sameness”. An utopia is a world where there are no problems ( that is what the community is trying to be ) and an dystopia is a world made up of rules ( world,place,town anywhere people can live ). To me, I say that instead of it being utopia where everything is perfect and people have the right to make their own choice, it is an dystopia. This theme is present in this novel because once Jonas got memories from The Giver he realized his life isn't perfect. Once he saw the dark secrets of the community Jonas realized that the community was quite the opposite of perfect once he got memories from the Giver. Once Jonas realized his community isn't perfect, and that the people in his community have no emotions or memory because the elders decided that the people didn't need memories. Jonas decided to rebel against the elders, and leave the community. As he is the receiver who has all the memories and emotions of the community, once he leaves the community his memories gets transferred onto the people of the community. To begin, The Giver is a flawed book, but, plot and writing style balance out the story’s issues. The story is set in an organized, futuristic utopia. In fact, most of the story’s action happens when Jonas finds out the truth about his community’s rituals. Following this, they live hundreds of years in the future. Reason being that the Giver explains how humans used to live in freedom and self-expression. More exactly, things that are seen, expressed and experienced in this day and age. The community has climate control, and no member of said community is able to see color. There is no question that Lowry creates this setting in order to deliver her plot coherently. By extension, without the perfect community in the picture, there would be no place for the story.

The Giver (1993) is a dystopian novel Jonas is an eleven years old boy, who lives in a perfect world. Jonas looks different from everyone has pale eyes while everyone have dark eyes. He feels confused and afraid from the Ceremony of Twelve. This ceremony is when elevens are given their Assignments. The community of Jonas knows nothing about pain or emotions (booker 23-24).

Would the community in The Giver be considered a utopia or a dystopia? People that are choosing between the two would mostly choose dystopia and some might choose utopia . This leads to the most chosen , a dystopia, for the main choice.
