It was a cold October night and the wind was blowing strong outside while I stood inside the gloomy school. Meekly, my friends and I waited for the exciting news: who would receive the lead in the winter guard show. Hastily, I sat down next to the girl I knew I was competing against. Weeks prior, she and I agreed that we would not become mad or upset at one another for getting the main role in the show: it was one-of-those-frenemy-type relationships. Our lengthy practice was almost over and one of my friends asked the question we had all been waiting for, “Who would be given the lead of the show?” Kayla, my coach, stared at the ground and silence filled the room. Finally, she blurted out my name. Cheers and shouts filled the room. Jubilant screams came out of my mouth like a little girl that had just arrived at Disney World. Everyone congratulated me. I examined the room and noticed my ride, who ended up being my adversary, nowhere in sight and almost all the group was already gone. All those who were left behind were those who were not planning on attending the team dinner. I was left behind. A look of panic was spread across my face. I then realized she was no longer my friend. After all, she failed to keep her end of the covenants that we had negotiated. She was not the same person I had known for multiple years. Friendships die. I soon found out that I had a true friend by my side the whole time: Jakob Sommers. Not only did Jake come back to the school and get me, but he also payed for my food and kindly took me home.
