Ask anyone what ethics means and the number of different answers will likely equal the number of different people that were asked. One person may say that ethics are like lines in the sand that establish right from wrong. Another may use that same description to define morals or principles. Much of the complexity comes from the fact that an answer can be different from person to person. Also, different types of ethics, such as business and corporate ethics, may be judged by different criteria than personal ethics. Oftentimes there may be no clear answer, and so both good and bad apply (Reynolds, 2015). To further complicate the issue, consider that what was ethical to prior generations may not be so for younger generations, and so the answer can change over time or generationally.
An example of this generational shift can be found when, in 1964, the Civil Rights Act ended segregation. It was brought about by a generation of youth that encompassed a social perspective that recognized segregation as unethical and unlawful. However, the concept of segregation was considered ethical to three generations of citizens prior to that. In fact, only 68 years earlier, in Plessy vs. Ferguson, the Supreme Court mirrored the societal ethics of the time and ruled in favor of segregation (Plessy vs. Ferguson, 1896).
Another broad example is the shift in privacy ethics during recent years. Since the invention of the telephone, there have been concerns regarding the potential abuse and unethical uses of information technology (IT). ANS: Ethics means the idea of society about what is right or wrong. Ethical values are not moral values they can vary from place to place depending on the society. This might also bring conflicts of interest between two parties. However in whole world we follow a standard and right ethical business culture to reduce such conflicts.
Ethics has been around for a long time. Merriam-Webster defines ethics as rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad. It is an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior. Ethics has much to do with feelings and beliefs. If you feel deep down in your heart that something is not right, then it you should not do it. The Bible says, “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin” (James 4:17 English Standard Version). Ethical business procedures include guaranteeing that the main legality is in place. Also, the company observes moral standards in its relationships with the people in its business community, which includes the most important people in their business, who are the customers. This report will discuss ethics in business, ethically transformed organizations; organizations preparation to make ethical decisions, ethical danger signs, and organizations that does business globally.
Ethics is the moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity. It is the moral values that a person believes in. The way that a person interacts with others. The golden rule of treating others how you would like to be treated. Having good ethics is a basis for having a successful business.
“Ethics is about how we meet the challenge of doing the right thing when that will cost more than what we want to pay.” (The Josephson Institute of Ethics) When I think about everything that I have learned within the Business Ethics class, I think of one topic – Understanding Ethics. This teaches you many things like what ethics is, how to understand right and wrong, ethical reasoning and much more. “The field of ethics is the study of how we try to live our lives according to a standard of “right” or “wrong” behavior–in both how we think and behave toward others and how we would like them to think and behave towards us.” (Business Ethics Now, Ghillyer, 4) Some people consider ethics to be a conscious choice to follow a set of moral standards or ethical principles that supply direction on how they should perform in their daily lives; others, however, look to the behavior of others to decide what is an acceptable standard of right and wrong or good and bad behavior. Many factors including how they were raised, their religion, and the transitions and beliefs of their society drive their definition of the right or wrong. Judgments are made about good or bad behavior by moral standards, which are principles based on religious, cultural, or philosophical beliefs. These beliefs can come from many different sources such as family, friends, ethnic background, religion, school, the media–television, radio, newspapers magazines, the Internet, and personal role models and mentors.
Webster’s Dictionary defines ethics as “a set of moral principles: a theory or system of moral values.” (Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, 2011). Every person has ethics that he or she lives by, but sometimes in the business world many unethical business transactions occur. People do not realize that sometimes the statistics that he or she are fed have been falsified in order to get him or her to purchase a product or lure him or her in to participate in via false promises.
Ethics are principles of behaviour that distinguish between right and wrong. Resnik (2011) defines ethics as” a method, procedure, or perspective for deciding how to act and for analysing complex problems and issues” (p.1). People face ethical decisions; however, People working in business frequently face ethical decisions. Business ethics is the evaluation of business activities and behaviour as right or wrong (Society for Business Ethics, 1991).
Ethics is a word that most described with doing what is right, and to be a company that wants to supply a good or service to people, doing what is right is a quality that company would want to have. One of the first companies that comes to mind when I think about integrity would be United Services Automobile Association also known as USAA. This is an insurance company that has so much to offer other than just insurance like banking services. USAA is a company that started with a noble cause of just wanting to help those who have served this country by providing discounted rates on insurance. When you go to USAA online website, you will find “Service. Loyalty. Honesty. Integrity. Our core values guide everything we do,” and this is literally how every employee under this company’s name serves each one of their customers.
According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary 2017, the term “ethics” is defined as the moral duty and obligation; the discipline of dealing with the good and bad as well as a set of moral principles such as righteousness. Everyone has a code of ethics that they go by. It sets a standard as far as who they are as a person. Just like employers have a code of ethics that they go by within their line of employment to the employees.
The term ethics are principles about what’s correct and incorrect or moral and immoral (pg. 38). Even though ethics based on both individual views and social perceptions, it’s differ from person to person, from situation to situation, and culture to culture (pg 39). At a young age every individual is taught ethical behavior. Knowing what’s right from wrong. Everything a person do, say, and act is from an ethical viewpoint. For example, is it ethical for Jimmy to steal candy from a corner store? The answer to that question is no. It was unethical for Jimmy to steal candy from the store. Ethics is defined as the set of moral principles or values that defines right and wrong for a person or group. The problem with ethics in today’s world is most employees do not believe their organizations leadership is ethical. The other consideration is one of mistrust. Employees are afraid to report anything for fear of retaliation.
From the very first discussion where we were tasked to consider what a CIO should do, I was keenly aware of how our own perspectives were such a large part of how we phrased our responses. Regardless of the topic, thinking from the consumer perspective is different from the business or information technology perspective. In this class, it has become apparent that information technology has its own perspective and set of ethics. In this class, we tried to apply traditional ethics to the uses of information technology, but often found that they do not fit as seamlessly as other technologies have in the past. This is because of the business perspective, the uniqueness of the technology, and the uncontrollability and thus unaccountability of the internet. It is clear that both private citizens and corporations do not adhere to the same ethical beliefs when information technology is part of the equation. I realized that our perspectives are often an expression of our ethics.
The word ethics has many definitions depending on who you are speaking with and if it is business related. One person may tell you that ethics has to do with what is right and wrong. Another may say it has to do with that law of the land. In fact there are many interpretations and definitions for ethics. In Corporate Communications there is a totally different set of code of ethics.
