For over 2,000 years, slavery has been conducted in various parts of the world. From year 1500 to year 1900, Europeans stole individuals from West Africa, West Central Africa, and Southeast Africa and shipped them to the different parts of the Atlantic. This process dehumanized them of their identity. Europeans stole husbands, wives, merchants, blacksmiths, farmers, and even children. They removed them from their homelands and gave them new names: slaves. European slaveholders never thought to take ownership of their actions by killing humans with brutality and degradation. As the European nations began exploring North America, they overtook the native populations of the areas and turned them into unpaid laborers. However, these people were not enough to supply landholders with sufficient aid. To make up the necessary numbers, plantation owners utilized indentured servants and then a number of slaves imported from Africa. Indentured servants were people who would be taken from the Old World to the New in order to start a new life. However, since they would not have the necessary funds to pay for their transportation, their journey would be funded by either a manufacturer or a plantation owner and their debt would be paid off by working for their benefactor. Slaves were not given this opportunity. These were people who were taken from their homes and families and forced into labor by threat of violence or death. This practice did not begin in the United States, but America was still allowing slavery well into the 19th century, long after other nations had come to the conclusion that slavery was inhumane and brutal.

Slavery began in the late 16th century to early 18th century. Africans were brought to American colonies by white masters to come and work on their plantations in the South. They were treated harshly with no payments for all their hard work. In addition, they lived under harsh living conditions, and this led to their resistance against these harsh conditions. The racism towards the African Americans who were slaves was at its extreme as they did not have any rights; no civil nor political rights.

The introduction of slaves allowed for the Colonies to better control and easily identify their labor force. Indentured Servitude was the leading labor force in the New World until the early 1700’s. It was essentially a person who was to work under contract for a definite period of time. Many of the indentured servants were Europeans who wanted to come to the New World but did not have the funds to do so. So they came with colonists and were guranteed passage to the new world in exchange for work.

Each slave also supplied a lifetime of service if they would survived the voyage and the numerous possible diseases(Norton, 69). In 1619, when English pirate ships, White Lion and the Treasurer arrived in the British colony of Jamestown Virginia carrying with it, twenty enslaved Africans, colonist traded food and services in exchange for human cargo. Once traded, the Africans were entered into limited periods of indentured servitude and joined the colonies workforce, which had roughly one thousand English indentured servants (Slavery in the United States, 2011).
