I wish to become a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated because I want to be a part of an organization of women who are not afraid to go the extra mile, positively impact the community, and stay true to who they are. As a teen I participated in “From Girls to Pearls”. During my time in the program I learned many life skills that served valuable to me in my adult life. One of the most memorable experiences for me is when the sorror’s of Gamma Zeta Zeta taught a workshop on how to eat in a professional setting. My interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, started a long time ago, in fact when my first interest was peaked I wasn’t even able to pursue my interest as I was still in high school. I was able to participate in several of the “groups” within Alpha Kappa Sorority Inc., such as the “Roses” and the “Pearls”.

Joining a sorority is not just four for years but for life. Going through a week-long process of meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well. Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn’t have to be an intimating process.

Going into college, I knew that I wanted to join a fraternity, but I was not thoroughly sure which one to choose or which ones stood for what. During the organization fair, the President of Sigma Phi Epsilon showcased his fraternity with all of his statistics about his brothers. They have had the highest G.P.A. four semesters in a row, Chapter of the Year for two consecutive years, and the aspect of Sigma Phi Epsilon that caught my attention was their intramural success- softball in particular. Holding that championship title, I knew at this point that Sigma Phi Epsilon was the right fraternity. The day that I signed my bid was an eventful day for me. I want to join Kappa Alpha Order to grow as an individual, to create a bond with a group of men that will support me for life, and to have the best four years a man could ask for. I knew going into college that I wanted to join a sorority. I was a legacy and felt the need to carry on that legacy. However, what ended up happening was not what I had in mind. Instead, I created my own legacy by joining a different sorority than those of my family members. But what I came to find was that the chapter that I chose was full of girls who cared about their friends and sisters. I stayed because I too cared about the other members who are a part of the same sisterhood.

One of Sigma’s values is upholding standards and producing women of character. When seeking out potential new members we do not base our selections on looks and appearance, we consider character, leadership qualities, academics, and ethical conduct. “Sigma Sigma Sigma reaffirms its long standing core values of wisdom, power, faith, hope and love” (Tri Sigma Today). Once initiated, or formally inducted, we strive to uphold these standards as sisters. In general, the required GPA to pledge a Greek organization is 2.0, but we hold ours to a firm 2.5 GPA. I believe that I posses the level of ethical standards and integrity and dedication to sisterhood and love for service, required to uphold the reputation of Alpha Kappa Alpha. These characteristics are expressed in my actions and the strives I make to and improve my character daily through what I call “small victories”: small things that can be done to better myself and others daily. These are achieved through academic integrity and doing my part, to volunteer, mentor and help people any time presented the opportunity. My dedication to sisterhood in my opinion is rarely matched and is one I have been nurturing for years, starting as a Girl Scout, continuing to Girls In The Game program and most recently apart of a Sisters Inc, a mentoring/leadership program that I’ve had the pleasure to be involved with in for over six years and have been involved with on numerous levels; mentee, mentor, ambassador and alumni commitee. I’ve been afforded the opportunity to make life long friends, mentor girls, build self esteem and develop in my journey to being an all around model citizen. All of these programs not only showed me the importance of sisterhood but also scholarship and service, showing me that a real sister are those that will help you and will except your help back. A real sister is one who you never have to sacrifice your love of service you’re your dedication to scholarship for and lastly love you like blood. Lastly I believe that my love of service is characteristic I believe that I can use to maintain the status of Alpha Kappa Alpha, from a young age my grandmother would preach to me “do unto others…”. From a young I knew it was my responsibility to assist someone in need any chance I am given. And have carried this belief to every organization I have joined for the Girl Scouts of America to my recent membership into the Student Activity

Currently I am the first person in my entire family to attend a 4-year university, and I have plans to go to grad school. I personally strive for excellence and take pride in everything that I do from my grades, to my community involvement, and my campus involvement just to name a few. This being my second year here at the university I have gotten a chance to see close up a view of how the Kappa Alpha chapter actively engages with the campus and the community. Coming into my freshman year of college, I knew that I wanted to get involved around campus. I decided to join a sorority so I can get to know more people. First coming in, I just wanted to be a part of something. I had no idea that one day I would be on council as a vice president for an organization of over 300 people. On Wednesday's class there were different students representing clubs and organizations at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. The students who represented FAMU Connections talked how their organization recruit students through song and dance. The Greek student talked about the pros and cons of joining sorority and fraternity. When a person joins a sorority or fraternity he or she expands their social circle. I am happy to help a teammate learn more about sorority or fraternity life before sending their kids off to school this fall. There are 25 university pennants I collected over the year that hang at my desk.
