Sonia Doln Personal Statement

Sonia Sotomayor was born in The Bronx, New York City, in June 1954. Her father died when she was nine, and her mother raised her. After high school graduation, she entered Princeton University where she in 1976 graduated Summa Cum Laude and in 1979 received her J. D. from Yale Law School.

On July 1, 1999, I was born in Santa Clara, California and continued my life in San Jose for about a year, and then I moved south and was introduced to Visalia. This is my family’s first time moving out of the Bay Area, but ever since we came to Visalia we settled here ever since. Both of my parents, Elia and Ramon, are Spanish speakers and so my first language was Spanish. As soon as I went to school I began learning English quickly and my parents were dedicated to helping me advance in my education. Fast forward to my high school years, they found a high school, University Preparatory High School, that would benefit me and enrolled me. Working in both Transportation and Urban design fields was always my dream.When I took several courses in Urban transportation in undergraduate school, such as urban transportation planning and urban transportation network design, I realized this field is where I want to work. I also participated in some international conferences regarding urban transportation and sustainable design to find out how different countries are designing their network system and how they meet the needs of their community.

I have always been interested in women’s health and after taking a course at Cal called Evolutionary Medicine I was introduced to what a Doula was. Since then I have been interested in the work that doulas do as I believe that providing support and care for pregnant women is pivotal for both the baby and mother’s health. My goal is to learn how to help support a mother by gaining the necessary clinical skills. I also wish to exercise my ability to speak Spanish and am particularly eager to be able to work with Latina women. I am excited to be a part of a team and to be in an environment that allows me to really learn about female prenatal/postnatal care and everything in between. I realize that the work will be challenging but I am excited

Throughout the course of history there have been many advances in the world of infrastructure, mostly occurring in the 1800’s and the 1900’s. Infrastructure is defined as the basic physical and organizational structure needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services and facilities necessary for an economy to function. This definition shows how important infrastructure is to people’s lives today. It affects how people live, travel, and communicate with one another. Three men who made huge contributions in the world of infrastructure were Robert Moses, Richard Ravitch and Othmar Hermann Ammann. All three of these men were involved in designing numerous landmarks, highways, bridges, tunnels, and other forms of infrastructure that today we take for granted. Although all of these men were involved in infrastructure in the New York metropolitan area, their contributions, personalities, and the public’s opinion of them were all different.

I completed my senior project at the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA). Through the course of the project I learned about the engineering division’s responsibilities within RTA and received the full picture of how a large construction project is built from beginning to end. I greatly benefited from this experience as it has increased my interest in the engineering field.

With the constant discovery of scientific principles and new engineering designs, the responsibility often lies in the hands of engineers to decide what is in the best interest of the public. Millions of people around the world use products and structures developed by engineers, every day. Before accepting work from a client, it is important that engineers have a good understanding of their own personal limitations. If work is accepted that they are “not competent to perform by virtue of [their] training and experience” , there is a clear disregard for public welfare and potential for a serious safety hazard. I maintained a high academic profile ranking among the top 6% of my graduating class. During my undergraduate study, it was the field of Transportation Engineering that caught my special interest and ever since I have strived hard to achieve my dream of becoming a Transportation Engineer. My interest for Transportation Engineering was sparked by courses, Transportation Engineering and Highway Engineering in my third year. These courses introduced me to the fundamentals of traffic engineering and geometric design of roads respectively. As part of the course requirements, we undertook a mini project where we carried out traffic survey and subsequently undertook traffic analysis for a major road in Kumasi, Ghana. We also carried out parking studies on campus, carried out analysis and presented our results through a presentation. Subsequently, I chose Transportation Engineering as one of my electives in final year. To augment the theoretical knowledge gained in class I interned at Ussuya Construction Limited during vacations, where I gained knowledge on surveying, supervision of road works on the construction of the Spintex Road

Architecture. My journey is hopefully about to start right here. As a young girl I have constantly been attracted to those tiny details that everybody seems to neglect, I had an interest to look further into things. You could say I viewed things from various angles and tried seeing through them. Almost as if trying to translate their meaning. Quite obviously at such a delicately minded age I was not sure what this interest I had really meant. However, as my mind widened and I was able to produce realistic conclusions, I finally understood. Ultimately figuring it all out, my obsession was revealed. Putting the puzzle together, my nights spent drawing cubes haphazardly and coming up with surprisingly astonishing ideas for buildings I would like to see my trademark around the world, which is only possible by studying architecture, it only drastically grew simultaneously, after increasing my knowledge about this exciting field, leading me to understand what it was all about. I’d also like to introduce the two people that aided me to exceed on this discovery, the parents I am grateful for. However, the most important figure behind my wondrous thought of architecture was my father. Being able to be given the chance to see him be in complete control of a construction site and at the same time creatively coming up with sustainable ideas to complete the site amazed me. Knowing that an architect is the creative mind behind a civil engineers work. Which is exactly what I wanted to be.

I have literally known what I want to be since I was a toddler. Of course, as a three-year old putting together Legos, I could not have verbalized that I want to be a mechanical engineer. However, it was at that time that I began to develop and use the skills that I will need for my desired career. I began to consider how parts went together and the different components necessary to build and sustain various systems. Part of the inspiration was the simple fun that I had while putting together these small toys, but part of my inspiration was my father. He was a maintenance turn-around coordinator at an oil refinery, which led to my own desire to work as a mechanical engineer in a refinery one day. As I grew older, my interest in mechanical engineering remained constant, though I expanded my interest beyond the oil refineries. In fact, after attending a pre-college program, Jackling Introduction to Engineering, offered by Missouri Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri in the summer of 2011, I realized that engineering was the perfect way to exercise my curiosity and inventiveness in a constructive and productive manner.

My research established an understanding of existing cableway technology and explored a practical engineering improvement for adaptation in developing countries. I identified that engineering, a topic of personal interest, should be the field of research considered. A discussion with university students was completed to find a specific issue that I could investigate. One topic suggested for investigation from the EngineersWithoutBorders Challenge, inspired the research question.

It may seem wired, but the sense of revenge threw me into the field of water engineering. I spent most of my childhood outdoors on my father’s farm close to a small city in the west of the province. As a hobby, my father gave me a small part of his farm, where I grew up different crops with his help. During that time, I enjoyed nothing more than to see the farms green. But those days did not last long and water scarcity impacted the farm's yield, resulted in water conflicts between farmers. The whole income of the family depleted and left no choice other than selling the farm and migrating to the capital of the province for other means of income. During high school when my classmates were thinking about the major primary branches of engineering such as chemistry, mechanic and electric for their post-secondary education, I was thinking about a different major.
