Social media sites have taken over our lives in the past years. Social media plays an important role in our life today. Whether it is good or bad, over the past years social media is a rising trend in the world today. Everyone use social media, young and old. It is hard to imagine that we did not have social medial until 10 years ago. I am interested in this topic because I myself use social media every day, I have seen good things happen to people through social media just as much as bad things. I found myself checking my twitter page and other peoples page without even thinking about it. Sitting behind a phone screen or computer can be fun but also bad. People communicate all day every day through email, texting, phone call, and of course social media. Social media has a great impact on people today than ever before. Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter are becoming the most visited sites on the internet. These websites and apps allow people to easily share location, pictures, link, and messages with other people. Social media is being accessed by parents, students, businesses. It is being used by many different people all around the world for many reasons.

Social media has gained immense popularity, following increased access to the internet and technology devices including smart phones. Social media is used to denote platforms in which people build and share social connections; thus enhancing information sharing and interaction. Major examples include Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest and Instagram. Through social media, people can connect, interact and exchange information such as pictures, videos and other digital media by registering as users in these platforms and updating information affecting their lives on their profiles. When social media applications came into existence, these were mostly used for interacting and sharing with friends, relations and new friends acquired through these platforms. Social media has however been constantly abused, as people turn it into a ground to vent, lie, insult, bully or threaten others. The social networks no longer serve their intended purpose in the society and users have taken advantage of the free space to say whatever they want with no regard to how it affects others. People have used such domains to brandish their selfish acts and gains.

Social networking sites promote interaction with distant family and friends. Social networking sites can demonstrate opportunities to strengthen existing relationships and to develop new friendships as well. The downfall of social media sites prevent less face to face communication. Also, social media has been known to be more likely to spread false, and even potentially dangerous information. Questions come about quite often about social networking sites, and if they are good for our society. As a member of our society social networking can have a positive influence in school, relationships, promoting business, and self-expression. While others may view social media as a negative influence, for me, the issue hinges on how social networking sites are being used and displayed accordingly.

Just to think social media as we know it was birthed less than ten years ago in August 2003 with MySpace and has become such an integral part of our daily lives. Synonymous with checking our email we go to our Facebook for not only our daily gossip, but for up to date news and events.

By the year 2000, people more regularly had access to the internet and an increased number of users joined MySpace and/or LinkedIn, popular social media sites of their time. In 2005, everything changed. Social media REVOLUTIONIZED like never before. Mark Zuckerberg invented Facebook and social media took off! Soon after, text messaging and Twitter developed, and before long, an explosion of sites hit the internet. Does it improve or damage the way we connect with each other? Although, social media may create few positive outcomes, such as easy access to managing relationships and the ability to integrate social networking in business, its repercussions outweigh the benefits.

Social media and networking seem to play an essential part in everyone’s lives throughout the planet. Many debate whether it is improving or destroying human face to face interaction. Facebook changed the outlook on how we interact and some adolescents say they feel lonelier through it while adults feel like this is bring us closer together.
