There are many people in this world who don’t understand why veterans sometimes get preferential treatment over, what my appear to be, a better qualified candidate but are not disabled. There is also certain criterion that helps to determine the qualifications of a veteran, who may be already drawing a certain percentage of disability, to the other candidate, who may be fresh out of college. What the world needs to remember is the fact that a veteran has already made a choice to defend his/her country. This, in turn, automatically places the veteran ahead of someone who just chose to go to college. It also depends on what the qualifications of the job

Some of them can’t get around as good but they are very good at what they do. At first I thought to myself,” why are these people still working? Why aren’t they drawing a check and sitting at home?”The reason is because they are doing almost the same thing they did in the military. There is nothing better than on the job training. Sometimes you have go through it to understand it. That is when you become a subject matter expert. It is very important to understand the concept of war to try to find an easier way of doing things so that it won’t be as hard for the Soldiers that follow behind us. For a moment, I too, discriminated until I realized that sometimes you have to go through something to understand it better.
The American Disabilities Act is a federal civil rights law for people with disabilities, comparable to civil rights law passed in the 1960’s for other minorities, not just veterans. It covers employment, state, and local government services, public accommodations, and telecommunications for the deaf. Although an employer can still hire the most qualified person for the job as long as the disability is not used to disqualify a person, the ADA is still needed to protect and lessen confusion for the disabled and normal people. As of 2014, there are 22.5 million veterans in the United States. According to Veteransinc.org, between 529,000 and 840,000 veterans are homeless at some time during the year. Did you know 33% of homeless males are veterans? Aside from homelessness, 70% have substance abuse problems, 45% suffer from PTSD, and there are 22 veterans who commit suicide every day. The problems don’t end there, homelessness is just one problem for our veterans. 573,000 were unemployed in 2014. There are many causes for unemployment such as PTSD, war injuries, or lack of knowledge in the work field.
The Americans with Disabilities Act provides civil rights to those who are disabled. The ADA guarantees equal opportunity to those individuals who are disabled in the work force and with the state and local government. The ADA will ensure that people with disabilities are not discriminated against when it comes to hiring, firing and advancements. The employer must provide certain accommodations for those with disabilities, but only if it does not cause them undue hardship.

The Americans with Incapacities Act (ADA) got to be law in 1990. The ADA is a social equality law that forbids oppression people with handicaps in every aspect of open life, including employments, schools, transportation, and all open and private places that are interested in the overall population. The motivation behind the law is to ensure that individuals with handicaps have the same rights and open doors as other people. However, statistics have shown a surprising rise in veterans with limited health care, no house, and no job. One of the current social policies in place that protect the rights of the Deaf and hearing impaired is the Americans with Disabilities Act. (The Americans with Disabilities Act, 1990 ) The ADA is a body of laws and policies that bans discrimination against those with disabilities. This includes the deaf and hearing impaired population. The ADA has four sections that cover: employment, public accommodations, government and telecommunications. In order to be compliant with the ADA, employers are compelled to inquire about the types of accommodation needs the deaf employee has so that they may work alongside others with the least amount of distractions or interruptions.
When the law was signed, new doors opened for the deaf and hard of hearing culture for a better opportunity in gaining equal rights. President Bush appointed four titles to protect deaf and hard of hearing people. In “The ADA and Deaf Culture” by Tucker, B. Title I, prohibits both public and private employers from refusing to hire or promote an individual because of his or her impairment and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for applicants or employees who are deaf or hard of hearing (Tucker 28). If a deaf or hard of hearing employee can pass the essential part of the job qualification, he or she is protected by the ADA to be hired. Also, the ADA prohibits employers to discriminate disabled people in means of recruitment, job applications procedures, pay rates, and promotions. With 52,397 wounded and 1552 service members that suffered amputations in Iran/Iraq all of them will come home to only face another huge struggle. Amputations rule out many jobs for them and puts them at a disadvantage when applying for any job. If an employer was to choose between two identical people but the exception was that one of them had an amputated arm, the employer would always pick the person without the amputee. This isn’t necessarily the employer's fault but it just shows that these veterans with amputations are put at a huge disadvantage in the job market.
