“Well, believe it or not, it’s true.” Dean’s voice was low as he let go of her arm and leaned back on the couch. “Though I guess my timing isn’t the best for it to sound sincere.” “You know someone wanting to murder me really isn’t a good time for anything, if I’m being honest,” Rachel tried to laugh it off, but she was a little breathless and her heart was fluttering just a bit from his touch. The best time for what to sound sincere? Was there more to that statement than Rachel wanted to believe? “It got me a date, didn’t it?” Dean gave her a little smirk before he flipped the channel and the eleven o’clock news came on. Rachel really had no idea what to say to that, so she just sat there and watched the news. It was the usual awful nonsense that was on every …show more content…

There was a moment that Rachel was sure that he was going to reach out, grab her, hurt her. She was sure that her heart stopped beating for a moment. Instead, after a long moment, he gave her one last long look, turned, and left the café. The next person in line started to tell Rachel their order, but she couldn’t hear them. The blood pounding in her ears now that her heart was beating so fast that it was almost painful. Luckily, she was able to mutter out that someone would be right with them before making her way over to Dean’s table, feeling as if her legs were jelly. “Hey, what’s-” the good natured tone dropped out of his voice immediately and he got to his feet, seeing how pale she was. “What is it? What happened?” “He…he was here, at the counter,” Rachel mumbled out, holding onto the table to keep herself upright. “He ordered a burger.” “Right now,” Dean looked over her shoulder and saw that there was a woman there. “He just left? He asked her to get out of the car and that they were gonna go for a walk. She was kinda scared because it was so late at night and she didn't have a flashlight. She got out of the car and walked to his side. He grabbed her hand and they started walking down the long dirt road. He darted off pulling her with him into the trees. They walked for about 20 minutes until Rachel stopped. She told him she wanted to go home but he told her to keep going a little farther. She grabbed his hand and they began to walk again until they came to a little patch of dead
The first sign he had of her rejection was the trembling of Rachel's arm in his. She had allowed him to speak and had neither turned her face toward him nor away from him. She had looked straight on and her voice was sad but firm and quiet when she spoke.

Rachel is anxious about her birthday which is shown by how many times she says the word “and” in the first four paragraphs. This is something that children often do when they are nervous, they repeat and stumble upon their words. We witness Rachel’s immaturity again later in the story when she keeps repeating “not mine, not mine, not mine.” The tone throughout this paragraph is frantic and uncontrolled. Rachel overreacts and begins to feel sick, much like a child would. However, she still keeps her composure on the outside by reassuring herself that everyone’s waiting for her at home and that everything will be okay. The experience definitely provided newfound knowledge for Rachel and she will know how to better conduct herself if she finds herself in a similar

This is reflecting how she is being influenced by John’s presence and not conforming to the Amish values. Rachel is determined to not be negatively influenced by the ‘idle gossip’ about herself and John. In the final moment of the scene John is sitting on the back of the cart while the rest of the men were singing a song in German. This emphasise that he doesn’t belong. This scene exhibits John’s desperateness of trying to be accepted into the Amish community. It also reflects the growing connection of John and Rachel’s relationship as Rachel devalues her culture in order to get closer to John.

Before Nick came back into her life, Rachel was still a virgin, and it is doubtful she had had much contact at all with the opposite sex outside of what was necessary.
