What are the dimensions of cultural diversity?
There have been a variety of attempts to develop a concise definition or reliable classification of what is meant by cultural diversity for a number of decades. Although there is no universal system available for determining what cultural diversity is there are several reappearing characteristics that are used by many of the experts attempting to arrive at a recognized system (Fearon, 2003). The first generalized dimension used is the concept of age. In any culture there is a distribution of ages that serves to affect how such culture interacts and operates. Age affects a culture in factors such as birth and death rate, the health of the culture, and how active a culture is. The broader the ages range in a culture the greater its diversity. Another factor that determines a culture's diversity is the makeup of the genders within the culture. This factor has assumed a greater role in determining the nature of cultures as more and more women have entered the workforce. This change has altered the overall demographics in the business and professional world and created diversity where homogeneity was once the rule. The final major classification in cultural diversity is ethnicity. Ethnicity is the ethnic composition of a particular group or culture. Cultural diversity can be defined as the cultural differences that exist between people such as, language, traditions, and the religious beliefs along with the way society carries itself. It is inevitable in the United States to notice the wide variety of cultures that with the years have come to share this land with Americans.
n a childcare setting it is vital that each and every practitioner is aware of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy and procedure and it is also vital that this policy is implemented in the everyday provision. With practitioners being aware of this policy they should ensure the activities they plan and provide involves equal opportunities and that every child in the setting is also treated equally.
Culture, by its definition, is, “the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group.” Almost 80% of Americans identify themselves as caucasian, yet within this large group there is a great variance in culture. This group is comprised of european cultures, ranging from italian to irish, in addition to middle eastern cultures, ranging from israeli to arabian. Similarly, around 12.3% percent of Americans identify themselves as black, yet once again within this group there is a multitude of different cultures; ethiopian, haitian, south african, and many more. These statistics demonstrate that race has no direct impact on cultural diversity. Despite this, people tend to be identified by race almost always more than by culture. Race being more commonly used as an identifier, is purely due to the fact that it is easier to distinguish between races, than between cultures, because the differences are generally more nuanced. Also relating back to the previous idea of the United States as melting pot, many cultures that were probably more distinctive at one point in time have become interwoven into the ‘general’ culture within America. The policies must take into account the rights of all individuals and groups within the school as well as considering the ways policies work to ensure equality, inclusion. Policies also pay regards to the values and practice, which are part of all aspect of school life.
For the most part, culture is the shared of basic expectations learned by a group as it find possible alternatives or ways to solve its problems. On the contrary, diversity as stated in the textbook, is the different values and cultures among members, and is more than simply an understanding of black versus white. For instance, culture could by identify through artifacts which include visible signs on the wall, how people display emotions, and the ways people address one another. Although, diversity are differences among people that could impact a work environment due to a social identity. For example, there is an increasing number of women and people of color in the workforce.
One person that has done research on cultural diversity is Geert Hofstede. He established the cultural dimension’s categories. He seeks to describe aspect of a culture according to different dimensions, starting with four originally Hofstede (2010):

In the article by Sereni- Massinger, she talks about cultural diversity, which can be defined as a variety of cultural, ethnical groups in a society. In the article by Schlosser, it covers ethnic diversity, which is defined as groups of people and people based on ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, religion, and sexual orientation.
