When parents hear the words “Social Media” the first thing to come to mind is usually bad news. Despite the negative publicity networking sites have received from the media in regards to bullying and sexting, it is also important to acknowledge that social media can have a positive influence in today's youth. Because teens are developmentally vulnerable, the risks cannot be overlooked but being open about the use of social media for teens is also important. Receiving news through Facebook and Twitter provides raw footage of events, keeping teens updated every minute. Google searching an article is no longer necessary because now apps are providing instant access. “So it turns out, they aren't going to specific news sites to pick and choose articles to read, but rather checking certain apps where the news has been preselected for them” (Godlewski). Social media is not just used for entertainment; teens have found a more fitting way to stay informed without reading the Sunday newspaper. Although cyberbullying has become more common in recent years, social media when used correctly can help teens boost confidence and raise self-esteem. Teens who are active on social media sites have likely posted a selfie at least once. A selfie is a self-portrait usually taken with a handheld device. Selfies give teenagers a way to control the image of themselves that they share with the world. When teenagers choose to post pictures, they become selective of what they want to post which allows them to put their best face forward. Teenagers worry about others’ opinions and “posting affirming selfies can be empowering” (Drexter). People can share information quickly, publish their thoughts, and exchange their ideas. Social media is becoming a certainty in this modern age, which is why it should be embraced rather than criticized. Although there is concern over potential for cyberbullying and lack of privacy, the use of social media is inevitable in teenagers’ lives, and necessary to the positive development of adolescents because it allows adolescents to gain confidence when interacting with others, it encourages users to create and maintain friendships, and it can facilitate learning while promoting educational growth.

Older generations don’t realize how much technology has affected this generation of teenagers, along with the social media that comes along with the technology. Let me guess you probably checked Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat in the last five minutes. Nowadays it seems like all we do is go on social media, considering that it has been on the rise for the last decade. On average a teenager is an electronic device for more than three hours a day.
