I have had several inspiring mentors during my academic career that have greatly influenced my teaching philosophy. These mentors exemplified not only an enthusiasm for teaching, but also care for their students. My teaching philosophy is that I, as a teacher, help my students learn how to find the correct steps for solving problems rather than provide them solutions. This maintaining this philosophy helped me to develop three key points of teaching: providing a positive learning atmosphere, setting clear and suitable goals and standards, and making a concentrated effort in my own improvement. A positive learning environment encourages student motivation, participation, and interaction because students feel comfortable to share their ideas. I personally believe that learning from peers is a great way to understand material. Moreover, this interaction also allows the instructor to discern a student's understanding of the content. To create and maintain this positive learning atmosphere, I have found it is essential to have appropriate responses to student comments and questions, and to create frequent opportunities for peer collaboration. In addition to maintaining a positive learning environment, providing clear and appropriate goals can help …show more content…
I believe the best teachers continually seek to improve their teaching skills, preparation, and materials. After every class, I try to evaluate my performance by reflecting upon how well I presented materials to students, and how the students responded to my explanations and questions. Then I make notes for future reference. This self-evaluation helps me improve my teaching skills, teaching preparation, and teaching materials such as lecture notes and lesson plans. My ability to ask questions and provide an in-class activities has been improving through evaluations. The evaluation from students and myself is an important motivation to become a better
As a student of education, I have been able to gather many ideas and opinions about practices and ideals I want to implement in my future classroom. My philosophies about education are still being formed and continually change with every class I visit and with every educator I encounter. My ideas, admittedly, come from random experiences and intangible texts, but as I gain more experience in the field through my courses, my philosophies about teaching will become more clearly defined. These few ideas I have now will undoubtedly be added upon as I enter student teaching and my professional career, nevertheless, they are concepts of which I hope to never lose sight.
I’m a confident public speaker and experienced communicator. I gained experience in this skills thanks to several extracurricular activities that push participants to our limits and beyond. For instance, ACE is mentorship program in which at each meeting we learn the basic of Architecture Construction and Engineering. We are expected to design, discuss, develop a plan and present to the whole team several different parts of an architecture or engineering project, all of this in two hours. Thanks to ACE I learned to work as fast as possible while preserving quality and efficiency. Furthermore, I express creativity in the form of writing, I do appreciate art in form of photography and painting among others, but writing is my stronghold. A bit
Education will always be the primary source of student’s success in the workforce, community, nationwide and globally. Teachers carry the weight of ensuring students are learning what is required to become productive members of society. As a teacher, the success of my students is the most important goal. There are so many pedagogies, philosophies, strategies, and materials teachers are able to use to be productive in the classroom. Every teacher has their own preferred
Another goal that I have had since the beginning of the course was to adopt an engaging and effective teaching style. My aim has been to take the positive traits of teachers that I have enjoyed, while keeping in mind the characteristics and mannerisms that I have disliked, and crafting my own unique teaching style. As I have lead class discussions, group readings, and mini-lessons throughout the semester I have began to develop a teaching style through trial and error. I have paid special attention to the list of 25 pointers for successful tutees from assignment two and and focused on making my teaching interactive, supportive, equal for all, and respectful. I have learned to appreciate that, concerning a student's individual success, a teacher taking the time to listen to their student is just as important as the student listening to the teacher.
Like a good business plan, every teacher should have a personal educational philosophy in place. Witcher, Sewall, Arnold, and Travers in Teaching, leading and learning: It’s all about philosophy (2001) say that a
I called my mentor at 3pm to let him know I was on my way to his apartment. When I got to his place, he opened the door and welcomed me in. We talked about our week and decided to look at the list that we made together. The list has activities that he wants to do before we terminate our relationship. I read the list aloud reminding him that I’m reading some of the ideas we came up with together. When I was finished reading the list he said, “I wanted to make dinner together.” He already thawed the chicken legs in the refrigerator. I asked him what he wanted to make out of the chicken and he wanted hot wings and chicken broccoli rice. I found a recipe on the Internet for Buffalo wings. I started putting the chicken legs on a baking pan. My mentor
As a recent new graduate I have had several different mentors through the process of obtaining my license. The one that stands out the most is one of my coworkers who I worked under during the new graduate residency program. This individual was not only my preceptor, but a mentor to me. She had qualities that I aspire to have as I grow as a nurse. She was a leader, loved to learn and teach, encouraged, and was very supportive. She is one of a few nurses that I can always turn to when I need assistance and she is always willing to teach and help.
Every person that walks this planet is comprised of three components that are unique to that individual. These components are the physical being, the spiritual being, and the emotional being. The physical being is exactly that; it is the tangible shell in which we live, made up of organs, broken down to tissues, further divided into cells, which are comprised of molecules, which are made up of energy. This energy is God, our spiritual being: the part of ourselves that ultimately matters. When we accept God, He dwells within us. If we do not accept God, we close ourselves off from fulfillment, both here and in eternal life with our creator. Our emotional being is a little trickier to define than the other two parts of our beings. Our emotional being results from our life experiences, and how we react to those experiences. Our emotional being differentiates us from all other humans. No two people have a lifetime of identical experiences and identical reactions.
Establish and create a supportive and inclusive learning environment, support and encourage student participation by allowing students to feel comfortable when expressing their views and opinions, set clear guidelines and routines for the classroom, clarifies guidelines for group work, such as clear instructions about role-taking and interaction between group members so that all students are involved and participate effectively.
8)The summer between my freshman and sophomore year in high school, I had an internship at the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of New York in Chinatown. It was the first time when I worked outside of a school setting. In CCCNY, I worked with incredibly patient and kind mentors to help the non-profit organization conduct events that would enrich the lives of the people. Other interns in the program were also very intelligent, and we became good friends. What I really enjoyed was when the mentors acknowledged my effort and ability and awarded me the opportunity of planning the award ceremony for the Second Confucius Plaza Cherry Blossom Photography Contest. Although the mentors gave me advises and my friends gladly helped me along the process, I
I thought my day at Kings University College was pretty awesome, probably because it was my first time at the campus. I felt they were really welcoming and the food there was so good. To be honest, I thought this trip would be very boring, however, I was totally wrong and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. I was really glad that I took part in this because the trip provided me with a lot of valuable information. When the two mentors, Fisher and Chirag told us about their experiences with international students, I felt like their experiences were valuable for young mentors like us. I learned how mentorship is a mutual relationship as both the mentor and the mentee benefit from this relationship. The tour around the campus was the one of the
For the past several months, my internship has been at a standstill. Although, recently things have started to move along. Connection with my mentor was not the best, but now it has been re-established. I know now which days are best for my mentor, which days have the most customers who seek naturopathic advice, and my mentor is giving me access to reading materials. These materials and time spent with my mentor will give me much needed knowledge about naturopathic and holistic solutions to ailments.
Not quite as often in life, we encounter a special someone that without you even noticing, makes a great impact in your life. This special someone was one of my teachers. It was not so long ago when I met my mentor. It was a dark and rainy day, the first day of Fundamental, my heart was pounding so hard, that I was able to hear every single beat; it was impossible to relax. I was sitting in the room with no friends around me as I told myself, this is not for me! But there she was sitting at her desk waiting for all her students to join the class. She looked very confident and very patient. As soon as the last bell rang, she said; ”Hi everyone, my name is Ms. Burgos, I will be your Fundamental instructor, by the end of this course
After reading this article, I concluded that providing varied instructional methods and learning activities which meet students’ academic and personal needs while creating a positive and safe learning environment are important strategies to utilize for all students, especially students with learning
Making brief notes after the lecture, or making a short list on impressions could be valuable for any teacher. Sharing is also a great strategy, sharing with other teachers, the school staff or even the students can be of great use; reflective practice works best when it is shared. Completing some ideas on a structured piece of paper, even a chart with good and bad points or ideas to implement or discard can be beneficial. Another plan can be looking for ideas in books, consulting different resources, and implementing peer learning group to discuss teaching issues; thus the practitioner’s theoretical background would be deeply improved. There are far more other strategies to enhance the teacher´s work, the mentioned ones could be considered the tip of the iceberg, each educator has the responsibility to find its own strategies if he or she wants to be the best teacher as he or she can
